In my 7 years experience as a mentor, the mentees were always looking to understand more about your mentorship style, your network, and how you will guide them more than they are interested in your experience, level or field of expertise. I’m not saying that the latter are not important, but I am saying that the mentee places more emphasis on the mentor-mentee relationship. Since this is a relationship of trust, it’s a good strategy to try and ease the decision for the mentee by providing your own referrals for previous mentees that you have supported, as if you are providing a referral to an employer. Lastly, something that really worked for me was creating a “Mentor Pitch Deck” for myself that I share with prospects.

At times, you must adopt a semi-coaching role when you have the opportunity. Engage in activities with them, which isn't always straightforward. Merely imparting crystallized experience may not suffice. Another approach is to refrain from providing direct answers. Instead, pose questions that guide them toward the correct solution, allowing them to explore it independently. Few can master this technique, as many mentors prefer showcasing their expertise to impress their mentees.

Walk the talk…. Mentor needs a lot of practical experience on the area of mentorship, he has to be already gone through the way the mentored will ask

Continuously be open to learning even as you get into this program. Apply the experience and book- knowledge you've gained over the years. Lastly, be flexible enough to find new ways of solving some problems that maybe you have faced before. The similarity in the problem does not guarantee the similarity in the solution, be open to raising various solutions

Just reciprocate the value you received on your journey. Have an authentic voice and focus on providing value without asking for anything in return. Mentees will find their way to you.
