1 Identify potential sources of bias

These sources may include data that is incomplete, inaccurate, unrepresentative, or outdated; the design of your algorithm reflecting your own assumptions, preferences, or values; implementation involving technical errors, limitations, or trade-offs; and evaluation involving subjective or inadequate measures. To identify these potential sources of bias, you should conduct a comprehensive analysis of the data, design, implementation, and evaluation processes that are associated with your algorithm. Additionally, it is important to consider the context, purpose, and stakeholders of your algorithm.

It's vital to understand what your algorithm is trying to achieve and how the demographics represented in the data will affect the outcome. If the data isn't drawn from a wide enough pool then you have obvious problems, then be very careful how your algorithm uses the data. If its samples it then run it many times to check patterns in the outcome. So be careful not to have a unrepresentative data sets BUT also make sure you have a fair sampling of the data from within the data set itself. An example is PCA, try and look at the drivers and how they relate to the source spread of data representation. In other words, know your data!

Algorithmic bias is serious issue, given it can poorly impact the outcome of a model. Some commonly known sources are, 1. Poor training data 2. Human bias (of people involved in building the algorithm, as well as training of model) 3. Low quality sources of data, where multiple audits and cleansing may prove to be costly. 4. Poor planning and quality control, can also lead to biased algorithms.

Bias may lead to negative impact to sensitive fields, where a lapse in accuracy may lead to serious issues. E.g. healthcare, genetics, law, education etc. A considerable amount of attention, effort and investment should be made on preventing an algorithmic bias. Some common ways are, 1. Stringent quality assurance (testing at multiple phases, with diverse datasets, types of target groups, corner cases, special testing for known biases, etc.) 2. Enable feedback loops into the algorithm for self learning 3. Add parameters to control the environment, that are specific to known biases. 4. Add an in-built quality for describing how an outcome has been derived (explainability) 5. Consider planning audits, as per the context and use of algorithm.

Increased sharing of errors, issues and corrective actions in forums/groups can help reduce error probability. 2. Sharing of algorithms, data, and learning can help improve models and outcomes 3. Clearly setting the goals, mechanisms and expected outcomes of AI systems, can improve trust in AI solutions, and create openness in the community. 4. Repositories of educational content from actual usage, experiences, with detailed use cases, can be immensely valuable for more robust algorithms and models consequently.
