To enhance your textile design experience and portfolio, Intern with design firms or textile companies to get practical exposure. Take on freelance work to provide design services to start-ups or small businesses. Creating a portfolio website is crucial for textile designers to showcase their work and attract potential clients or employers. Include a variety of high-quality images showcasing your textile designs, along with detailed descriptions of each project highlighting materials, techniques, and inspirations. Additionally, feature your contact information and a brief bio to provide context about your background and expertise. The look and feel of the website should reflect your design aesthetic, with a clean and visually appealing layout that allows your work to shine. Incorporate elements such as color schemes, typography, and imagery that align with your brand identity and evoke the desired mood or vibe.

In addition to portfolio sites and social media groups related to textiles you can join guilds and associations related to your specific interests. For example hand weavers' guilds, they are a great place to not only network but also learn more about current events, exhibitions, and other opportunities.

Work with the actual weaver and artisan craft clusters in the field. There are no shortcuts about it. The level of immense knowledge gained from such experiences, with their technical know-how and the designer’s creative skills, it’s a win-win for both. I have personally worked as a Designer in a number of Artisanal/Weaver craft clusters of handicrafts including Hand-embroideries and Textiles, within the specialised GI (Geographical Identification) areas in India, and the experience was exponentially enriching. The knowledge attained is incomparable, which stays with you for life. Moreover, you can cultivate good inter-personal relationships with the artisanal/weaver communities forging life-long connections, ultimately enhancing work.
