I agree with Swetha. Enrolling in a course or program is a great way to find a mentor. But at least in the legal-writing world I live in, not in the way you might think. Getting in a legal writing course or following a legal-leader like Bryan A. Garner or Ross Guberman not only unlocks a world of growth for legal writers. It gives us a shared vocabulary and a way of signaling (if you'll forgive the term) to more experienced legal writers that you share their enthusiasm and dedication to the craft. Through that calling card, you should be able to connect with a group of people who'll support you in your growth as a legal writer. And it my experience, it doesn't get much better than that.

You need to become worthy of being mentoring. I've seen people actively seeking mentorship. But are not dedicated enough to learn from the person. No one wants to mentor a person who don't have that hunger inside him/her. You will waste their time. Show them that you are the type of person whom they would love to mentor. They will ask you upfront, if you'd like to learn from me.

Search for references in your field. Following podcasts and check people who are enriching the writing community by not just flashing courses but in actual trying to provide value. Learn the metrics, follow their learnings and start engaging with them. Mentoring doesn't have to be a real person you can use books to mentor you. Find valuable books and seek wisdom.
