I agree with this, but I feel like “building rapport” is very broad/subjective here. Rapport building will look different depending on the population you are working with (i.e., children, adults, youth, etc). For example, with children, depending on their age, you can something like play blocks, do art activities, play outdoors, or cook. Rapport building can be something as small as remembering a client’s name or finding a similar interest in something. It is important to remember to always remain empathetic, use active listening, and ask questions to understand. Overall, it is important to know that rapport building is at the center of mutual trust and effective communication. A therapeutic relationship will not function without rapport.

2 Use motivational interviewing

Motivational interviewing is a client-centered and collaborative approach that helps clients explore and resolve their ambivalence or resistance to change. It involves using open-ended questions, affirmations, reflections, and summaries to elicit and strengthen clients' own reasons and motivations for change. It also involves supporting clients' autonomy, confidence, and readiness for change, and avoiding confrontation, judgment, or persuasion. Assist client learning to problem solve has been helpful to engage clients. In my experience, utilizing Socratic questions helps empower clients to solve their problems with help to clarify, prove perspective and assumptions. As an example, question viewpoints and probe consequences. By determining the consequences, clients can determine whether they should take action to prevent situations that can result in a catharsis for changes.
