1 Define the vision

How does it align with the organization's vision and strategy? How does it benefit the stakeholders and the society? Communicate the vision clearly and frequently to the team, and invite them to contribute their ideas and feedback. Make sure they understand how their work matters and how it connects to the bigger picture.

One thing i have found helpful is to always review the project scope, bring them on the roadmap of the project, tell the team how much value we will create if we succeed on the project. I also try to applaud and celebrate their strengths and pay attention to weaknesses that i observe about each individual.

2 Delegate authority

The second step to empower team members is to delegate authority and responsibility to them. Give them the autonomy and flexibility to make decisions, solve problems, and implement changes within their scope of work. Trust them to use their judgment and expertise, and support them with guidance and resources. Avoid micromanaging, controlling, or interfering with their work, and respect their choices and opinions. Encourage them to take ownership of their tasks and outcomes, and to learn from their mistakes and successes.

The foundational step to make this delegation successful is to create a team alliance in the beginning where the leader asks the team how they want to operate together. The leader can help the team define the behaviors and qualities each member wants to embody while working together. It is also a good idea to develop a conflict protocol to help them define how they will handle potential issues. My asking team to define these ground rules, the leader helps the members be accountable and engaged during executing tasks and set the cultural tone intentionally.

3 Develop skills

The third step to empower team members is to develop their skills and competencies. Provide them with opportunities to learn, grow, and improve their knowledge and abilities. Offer them training, coaching, mentoring, and feedback that are relevant and tailored to their needs and goals. Challenge them to take on new roles, projects, or tasks that stretch their potential and expose them to different perspectives and situations. Recognize and reward their efforts and achievements, and celebrate their progress and growth.

Généralement, quand j’interviens dans un nouvel environnement, je commence par évaluer les compétences existantes en identifiant les forces et faiblesses de chaque membre de l’équipe en place. Puis j’offre des formations adaptées aux besoins spécifiques relevés. Concomitamment, il faut encourager à prendre des responsabilités… En responsabilisant ! Dans ce cas, les points individuels et réguliers sont nécessaires en adaptant le management visuel à cette situation (reportings agiles). Et puis il faut impliquer les équipes dans des projets stimulants. En résumé, le développement des compétences dans une équipe nécessite une approche holistique.

I think this should be the first step to empower a team. This is the foundation for building trust and meaningful relationships. If we want to inspire others to develop the best version of themselves, we also need to be on the same road. The road starts by matching what we say with what we do, by being honest with ourselves, mindful of our actions, humble enough to say "I screwed it", and open enough to invite others on the journey.
