Data Science projects often do not begin in my expeience with a clearly defined objectives and scope. Unlike other projects where task is to create a web portal or integrate two systems as example; in a data science project the first step itself is to define the problem statement. In this period of ambiguity support is given in terms of communicating the vision which is the overarching vision of developing best in class products with a hands-on approach to collectively define the scope, responsibilities and tasks beginning with defining "what problem to solve".

From the point of view of data product management timeliness of feedback is critical. Given the nature of business dynamics and shorter time to market demands it is no longer useful to have end of year or even quarterly feedbacks. Taking opportunities during code review sessions, weekly catch ups for instance is very helpful. Feedback also includes expressing what is good and should continue while always encouraging to go out of the immediate tasks to see what else can be done. Innovation implies a systematic way to keep thinking out of the ordinary patterns to do something new or better, incremental or in big block sizes

Innovation is first and foremost a grassroots phenomenon. It does not happen when managers or leaders in general expect it or demand it. What leaders can do though, in order to facilitate innovation, is to recognize the need to move control over it to their teams and people and fully embrace the distinction between the two completely orthogonal operating modes they may find themselves in: running the business vs. innovating. One cannot do these two things simultaneously. It is the job of leadership to create the environments that stimulate creativity and allow dedicated teams to focus on ideation, and exploration/experimentation with new ideas, tools, and concepts while relieving them from the pressure of the day-to-day processes in place.
