As an executive coach, you work with leaders from different backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives. How do you build trust and respect in your coaching team, especially when you have to collaborate on complex and sensitive issues? Here are some ways to foster a positive and productive team culture that values diversity and inclusion.
The first step to building trust and respect is to understand yourself and your own biases, assumptions, and preferences. How do you communicate, learn, and work best? What are your strengths and areas for improvement? How do you handle feedback, conflict, and change? Then, seek to understand your team members and their differences. What are their goals, motivations, and challenges? How do they prefer to be coached, supported, and recognized? What are their cultural norms and values? Use tools such as personality assessments, feedback surveys, and coaching conversations to gain insights and awareness.
The second step to building trust and respect is to communicate openly and effectively with your team. Use clear, respectful, and inclusive language that avoids jargon, stereotypes, and assumptions. Listen actively and empathically to understand the message and the emotions behind it. Ask open-ended questions to clarify, explore, and deepen the conversation. Share your thoughts, feelings, and expectations honestly and constructively. Provide and receive feedback with appreciation and curiosity. Avoid blaming, judging, or criticizing. Use positive reinforcement and recognition to acknowledge contributions and achievements.
Remember that non-verbal communication (posture, body language, facial expressions) no matter how slight does register (sometimes subliminally) and can by more impactful then what you say. Don't concentrate on what NOT to say, just speak things the way you normally do. Most people can tell if your being genuine. If you have difficulty not being offensive you may want to rethink being a part of that group. Just listen. Listen more than you talk. Learn about the others by asking questions. Everyone has a story and knowing that helps you work more closely with them - or identify those who will be difficult to work with. Do not "one up" them. That will curtail relationship building and may be perceived as a challenge which is not good.
The third step to building trust and respect is to collaborate and co-create with your team. Involve your team members in setting goals, making decisions, and solving problems. Seek diverse perspectives and opinions, and value the input and expertise of each team member. Encourage creativity and innovation, and support experimentation and learning. Leverage the strengths and skills of your team, and delegate tasks and responsibilities appropriately. Establish clear roles, expectations, and accountability for each team member. Celebrate successes and learn from failures as a team.
The fourth step to building trust and respect is to respect the boundaries and preferences of your team members. Understand that each team member has different needs, preferences, and styles of working, learning, and communicating. Respect their time, space, and privacy, and avoid interrupting, micromanaging, or imposing your own agenda. Adapt your coaching approach and style to suit each team member, and offer flexibility and choice when possible. Honor their commitments, agreements, and requests, and follow through on your own. Apologize and make amends when you make a mistake or cause harm.
The fifth step to building trust and respect is to embrace diversity and inclusion in your team. Recognize that diversity is not only about visible differences, but also about invisible ones, such as beliefs, values, experiences, and identities. Appreciate the richness and value of diversity, and how it can enhance your team's performance, creativity, and innovation. Foster a culture of inclusion, where each team member feels valued, respected, and supported for who they are and what they bring to the team. Challenge and address any biases, stereotypes, or discrimination that may arise in your team or in your coaching context. Promote equity and fairness, and ensure that each team member has equal access to opportunities, resources, and support.
The sixth and final step to building trust and respect is to build relationships and rapport with your team members. Show genuine interest and care for each team member, and get to know them as individuals, not just as roles or functions. Express empathy and compassion, and offer support and assistance when needed. Share your own stories, experiences, and insights, and invite your team members to do the same. Find common ground and interests, and connect on a personal level. Engage in social and informal interactions, and have fun and laugh together.
