Vertical expansion is one suitable way to consider while designing in a small lot, but considering the functionality of having more than 3 floors for a single dwelling residential structure we would require an elevator which can increase the cost of construction. Sure it is an option, but not the suitable one for all.

Here's my take on the conundrum of a small lot and how to make the most of the new home to be built on this lot. Vertical expansion, both build higher as well as contemplating digging deeper. Lots of narrow NYC row homes have expansive "light tunnels" funnelling natural light vertically down to the basement level, and allowing this light to spill into common areas as it descends. The idea of a double deep basement also has benefits, as one of my luxury home builders did just that in order to create a full size squash court in his basement.

I would say compact layout is the best way to achieve the results in designing in a small layout. In my experience, small spaces pose a big challenge in terms of spatial planning and furniture layouts. I found this as a sort of a puzzle to design in small lots, Rather than the aesthetics, I went after the function of the space, Designing with the minimum space required for each function of each space including the circulation should be the first step. arranging each spaces with minimum wastage of area is the biggest and the most challenging step which will define the successful results.
