Icebreakers are a great way to ease into a meeting but it’s important to be sensitive to your audience as some people may not be comfortable with talking & sharing with others. If you sense there may be some shy people in the group, you might want to do 2 or 3 quick icebreakers as opposed to one long icebreaker. The variety will break things up and appear less intimidating as it’s constantly changing. Also, be sure your language (as the facilitator) is always positive, upbeat and encouraging.

Reframing and directing is a key role of the facilitator. We have to be on the lookout for discussion which is not productive or related to the goals of the group. If you minimize these and redirect, the goals will be met and the time will be well spent.
