What are some tools and resources that you recommend for multimedia design?

Careful planning and understanding of multimedia design principles can go a long way. Just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean you always SHOULD, right? The same principle applies here. Just because you CAN implement video in your course, doesn't mean you SHOULD upload hours of weekly lecture content without giving thought to the limits of student consumption. In the age of TikTok and super-short-form videos, multimedia design principles are more important to adhere to than ever!

You know that old saying "when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail?" When you're comfortable writing, talking, or video-ing, you're going to default to that. Good multimedia design in learning means choosing a medium that makes sense in the context of the audience, the learning goals, and the content. Makes sure to consider those three factors.

Some topics are just complex—financial modeling will always be complicated, no matter how it's explained or designed. Finding the most efficient way to present a topic ensures you're not adding extra burden to the learner. Aim for the Minimum Acceptable Chunk to make even the heaviest topics a piece of cake. With today's myriad of content creation tools, including AI avatars, graphics, and video effects, it's easy to get overwhelmed and lose sight of the main focus: your learning objective. Always prioritize understanding your audience—What motivates them? What do they already know? What do you want them to achieve? Keep it simple, clear, and focused on the learner's needs.

Just because something "can" do something does not mean it, and it alone, is the "only" thing that can do it. For most video design and editing, Camtasia is a simple tool that is based on timelines and layers. Very user-friendly. Vyond, Toonly, and Doodly all offer inexpensive yet impressive deliverables and also are very easy to pick up and begin creating immediately. Be wary of folks who are "pushing" a specific application over any others; there is usually some reason for this. Sometimes it's because they don't know anything else and at other times, it may be because they are receiving some sort of incentive for doing so.

For graphic design and image editing, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Canva are some of the best tools available. Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, After Effects, and Blender are great tools for video editing and animation. For professional audio editing, Adobe Audition is fantastic; however, Audacity works great for everyday audio editing as well (and it's FREE).

The right tools can elevate your multimedia design projects. Consider using Adobe Creative Cloud for a comprehensive suite of design applications, or explore more user-friendly tools like Canva (it's a game changer, trust me!) for quick and professional results. Tools like Figma are excellent for collaborative design work, while Blender is perfect for 3D modeling. Choose tools that match your project needs and skill level, and don’t hesitate to experiment with new software to expand your creative capabilities.

Sadly, we still have the tendency to think of the word "design" as meaning: graphical choices. "Design" does not just mean: making an object pretty. It also means planning to create a new, more preferable reality to the one that already exists. (This was Herbert Simon's concept of design.) So the most important thing about multimedia design is NOT the implementation but rather the structure of the content. So the best tools for multimedia design are graphic representations of relationships: mind maps, storyboards, Venn diagrams, tree outlines. The structure of your content, the desired actions of your end users: these are what you need to understand, and these will guide more visual and interactive choices.

Tutorials on platforms like LinkedIn Learning or YouTube can help you sharpen your skills in specific tools or techniques. While not promoting one site over another, if you are a Premium member here on LinkedIn, there are literally hundreds of hours of training and tutorials available. Additionally, depending on the application you are using, the developer themselves may offer tutorials and recorded webinars going over their applications and providing training, blogs, and support articles. For example, Adobe offers dozens of tutorials for ALL of their products, from beginner to advanced. Articulate and eLearning Heros is an awesome resource for all things Storyline and Rise related.

My main resource for multimedia design is YouTube, especially for quick one-off problems that I need to solve quickly. Rather than go through an entire formal course or try to scrub through lessons to figure out how to fix a single issue, I'll search YouTube and try out some of the top videos in the list. Usually within ten minutes, I've got a solution and am back working on my project. There are also many course-length video series from incredibly talented creators. When vetting these out, I consider relevance, views, and the creator's finished work to decide if I want to spend time learning from them.

Alison courses has a significant number of free courses available in any number of topics and tool. Additionally the learning platform on LinkedIn is an excellent place to gather information. The best resource you can have for design though is constant feedback and iteration over time. Good designers design and practice their skills. To say it another way, the tools don't matter you do!

There are plenty of existing tools available for various purposes such as multimedia, writing, eLearning development, and reporting. Here are a few additional recommendations to consider: 1. create a needs analysis beforehand to identify the project needs 2. study the existing tools (based on your needs): offerings, price, features, design etc. 3. request or send emails for demos - to help you see the real interface, the offerings and if will really answer to your needs 4. then you can you accurately choose and purchase it

Additionally, keep in mind the importance of responsive design, ensuring your content looks great on all devices. Lastly, always seek feedback from peers and users to refine your designs. A key consideration for any learning experience is what is best for the learners and the budget in the available time and with available technologies and resources. Not every instructional designer has access to multimedia tools or the skills and knowledge to use them. Not every learning environment lends itself to the use of multimedia assets. Not every learner needs the fun bells and whistles to learn the desired skills or knowledge. Sometimes a sheet of paper and a pen are all that is needed to have a great learning experience. Instructional designers have to remember that multimedia is great, but is it the most effective or necessary tool for the desired learning? Sometimes, the answer is no.
