It's important not to get lost in formalities, but to understand the purpose and essence of the “SMART” tool. Generally, everyone knows that a goal should be specific, measurable, achievable, and so on. However, sometimes this may not quite align with a company's mindset. For example, our new division is growing so fast that we initially set goals that seem not just unachievable, but downright impossible. Then, after going through several stages, the goal starts to seem crazy, but ambitious. And then, after a while, we get closer to this goal and gradually raise the bar again. So, we intentionally set a very high point B and quickly work towards it.

While most people are familiar with the idea of the “SMART” framework that goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, and so on, sometimes this approach doesn’t fully align with a company's mindset. For instance, in our rapidly growing division, we often set goals that initially seem not just difficult, but almost impossible. As we move through different phases, these goals can appear wildly ambitious, but they also drive us forward. Over time, we get closer to reaching these challenging goals and then continue to raise the bar even higher. In our case, setting an intentionally high target pushes us to work towards it quickly and effectively.

Having a smart goal sets clear definition of what you expect to see during the progression stages and end of every project you undertake. Alongside your SMART goals should be a RACI chart to identify your tasks, roles and responsibilities, milestones etc. From experience people and projects lacking SMART goals hardly achieve desirable results.

I would add that they should not only be specific but ideally they should be written and specific to best empower their development. Additionally, be careful as you make them achievable. All too often people allow their limited thinking prevent them from targeting growth goals that initially may not appear do-able (achievable).

I find that a lot of people misuse vision and mission and even use them inter-changeable. I find it more helpful to move away from a mission statement and use a framework of supporting elements. At the top is the Vision. This is a future state and for a team it is articulating how things look different because of the work of our team. Under Vision is Mission. The mission is what a team does to purse its Vision. Supporting the Mission are Pillars or Commitments. This is how a team operationalizes its Mission. And the foundation of all this are Values. I like to think of these as requirements of citizenship. These are the values that all the team members need to have to pursue the Vision.

Avoid making your mission statement too long or it'll be seen as irrelevant and get ignored by the team. This is an important document to guide everyone to greater achievement when written and applied properly.

You need a mission statement that is actually a mission. Create a mission statement that is centered around 3 economic objectives, is time-bound, and has a purpose. When the mission is clear, people will rally behind it.
