I can utilize various tools and frameworks to assess and update my vision and mission. SWOT analysis helps me identify internal strengths and weaknesses, as well as external opportunities and threats, to understand the current landscape and potential future directions. OKRs (Objectives and Key Results) provide a clear and measurable framework for setting goals aligned with my vision and mission. Scenario planning allows me to explore different future possibilities and develop contingency plans. Regular reflection and feedback from team members, stakeholders, and mentors can provide valuable insights into the relevance and effectiveness of my vision and mission.

SWOT is a great framework while assess the context of business in the process of goal settings. It is easy enough for anybody to follow, and yet comprehensive enough to ensure that the leaders are not caught unaware. Its comprehensiveness is driven by its focus on capturing the internal as well as external situations. Many organizations fail at looking within at their strengths and weaknesses, while some others fail to sense the market dynamics in their industry and the resulting opportunities and looming threats. Following the SWOT framework with diligence allows companies to assess the headwinds and tailwinds, and make appropriate decisions regarding the winning aspirations

When using SMART goals, be wary of tunnel vision. Focusing too narrowly on specific metrics can cause you to miss opportunities or emerging trends. Don't underestimate intrinsic motivation. Overly rigid goals might stifle creativity and passion, leading to box-ticking rather than genuine engagement. Watch out for Goodhart's Law. When a measure becomes a target, it often ceases to be a good measure, as people may find ways to game the system. Be cautious of goal displacement. Pursuing SMART objectives may shift focus away from your core vision and values. Avoid neglecting the emotional and aspirational aspects of your mission. Pure rationality in goal-setting can sometimes dampen the inspirational power of your organizational purpose.

Evaluating SMART attributes of a goal is a good sanity check to be performed on your goals to ensure that your goals are not diluted or vague or unrealistic. Having said this, nobody should use SMART framework to arrive/decide the goals. The goals are to be driven by your vision, mission, north stars and made relevant by your contextual analysis. The SMART framework is the last thing that you should apply to your identified goals.

One of the biggest pitfalls that accompany vision setting is the lack of communication on it, once the vision and mission are defined. This lack of communication is a major culprit in situations where the larger team, who is generally not involved in the goal setting process, remains oblivious to the vision and mission of the organization. Using templates like Vision canvas allows organizations to achieve greater alignment and clarity on the reason to exist, core values, and the direction in which they have to move. This alignments drivers more cohesive actions from all parts of organization and allows the org to move faster towards its goal/ achieving its mission

Preparing a mission statement for an organisation in a saturated market can be quite a sobering process. When reading it back, does your statement reflect your organisation's specific ethos and mission, or is it so generic that any competitor could have written it? In theory, a mission statement gives you more freedom and creativity to define your purpose and hold yourself accountable than SMART goals. However, just because it is more flexible than other frameworks doesn't make it easier or quicker to complete. You may find yourself running multiple versions past different stakeholders until you settle on something that feels authentic to your whole organisation.

Across the entire vision and goal-setting exercise, it is important to have clarity on the purpose of the exercise, the frameworks that help structure the exercise, and the tools that can help move faster through different stages. There are many frameworks and multiple tools, and organizations can pick any tool/framework that they are comfortable with. The degree of success in the exercise is actually defined by maturity, honesty, diligence and strategic thinking ability of the leaders involved in the exercise. A great facilitator could very well be the difference between a successful and an unsuccessful visioning and goal-setting exercise.

I would also think about a Balanced Scorecard to take into consideration the financial and non-financial performance of the organization. This allows a different angle in which to view alignment with the company’s mission and vision.
