Una presentación es una minihistoria y debe contar con un arco narrativo. Sí, como en las pelis. Piensa como si fuera un cortometraje. Así: debe tener una apertura que capte la atención y haga que la audiencia quiera saber más. Un final potente que deje a la gente con buen sabor de boca y entre la apertura y el cierre deben pasar cosas. Una estructura que funciona a la perfección (especialmente en el ámbito científico) es el viaje del héroe simplificado en 4 pasos: un contexto de partida, un conflicto que hace que salgamos de la zona de confort, la resolución de ese conflicto y la vuelta al inicio con el problema resuelto o el aprendizaje que hemos tenido. Haz un esquema con esta estructura y coloca tus elementos dentro de ella. Y ya está.

Each page should tell a story, it should be clear to the reader through both visuals and words what the key point is, they should all ladder up into something cohesive. Too often in scientific presentations, too much is left unexplained or the headline tells what is on the slide, not what it means. Your voice over should add pertinent details and provide nuance. But someone should be able to read the deck when you are not there and get to a similar conclusion.

If when looking over your slides you feel like you're going to need to say, "this may be difficult to read" or "this slide is pretty busy but.." you should try and use another slide to convey this information or format the slide so you don't have to apologize for it.

When you are presenting scientific data, aim to show one figure per slide, and always cite published data in the lower right corner of the slide.

Pero no, lo ideal: 1) 1 idea = 1 diapo 2) Las diapos TIENEN que ser visuales (qué tipo de visuales apoyan mejor lo que tienes que decir) 3) Deben ser relevantes. No la primera imagen que te salga al buscar sobre ese tema. 4) Vigila la accesibilidad: tama?o de fuentes, color, contraste... 5) Tendencia al minimalismo: menos es más. 6) Consistencia con la plantilla utilizada (colores, formas... en TODAS las diapos: ojo con el reciclado) 7) Preguntarnos siempre: ?son una chuleta para mí, como un guion... o son un apoyo para mi audiencia?

Los bullet points deberían ser evitados a toda costa, para lo cual, tenemos tres opciones: dividir en varias páginas con la máxima: 1 idea = 1 diapo, iconificar, o sea, poner iconos para que visualmente la información se vea espaciada y contenida o trocear y meter la información en cuadros o repartirla de otra forma que sea más visual. Además, es importantísimo dejar márgenes. Pensemos que un word nos deja márgenes por defecto, pero PPT no lo hace y siguen siendo importantes. Una presentación no es un documento. Lo ideal sería hacer un documento-dosier y otro que sea la presentación y que sea más visual.

Always remember - the last slide is just as important as the first one. So often we have a strong intro/start and forget to have a strong finish/conclusion.

Para mí, es importante buscar la interacción de la audiencia, ya estemos en persona u online. Online es cómodo porque les podemos hacer una pregunta y que contesten a través del chat, por ejemplo, o utilizar una encuesta o similar. En persona tendremos la cercanía y podremos personalizar más... Pero es fundamental este punto de la interacción y tendremos que estar preparados para ello. Además, la cantidad de texto o las imágenes tendrán que ser distintas por el propio contexto y porque online, al perder gran parte del lenguaje no verbal (gestos, etc.) quizá debemos reforzar con algo de texto nuestras diapos. Ojo, digo algo... no llenarlas de texto.

De ver a otras personas puedes aprender mucho: de lo que hay que hacer y también y, quizá más importante porque esto no te lo ense?an los libros, de lo que NO hay que hacer. Mi experiencia es mucho más interesante evaluando presentaciones de otras personas, como por ejemplo, de los ponentes del TEDx que organizo, de mis compa?eros del club Toastmasters o de las decenas de eventos a los que asisto. Así que, efectivamente, este es un punto clave cuando nos planteamos hacer buenas presentaciones. Asistir a muchas y evaluarlas de forma crítica.

Do NOT end on a "Thank You" slide. To me, my last slide is THE most important slide. It's the slide my audience will keep looking at for the longest time while I take questions. I make it count. You want your audience to absorb themselves in your research even while you're taking questions. A "Thank you" or "Questions" slide serves no purpose. Instead, summarise your research or paste a screenshot of your latest publication containing your talk's core themes. Let the audience take a look at your publication or read the summary bullets while you're engaging in a Q&A with them. Your last slide must contain the most important message you'd like to convey. A "Thank you" can be said orally. Make your slide count.

Before you do a presentation always try and stand in the room where you will be presenting and where you will be presenting. Are lights shining in your eyes? Can you comfortably stand at a podium or is it too high? Can you walk easily across the stage? If you are wearing a dress or skirt was this a good choice-- if your presentation is seated will you feel comfortable? SMILE
