In addition to the basics of the position, a) do some research on the future direction within your IT domain. It could be related to Cloud, AI, GenAI or just the latest players or releases/version in technology. b) Read up on the company interviewing you and think of benefits that they would have if they were using the latest technology. If you can link a) and b) and work that into your interview, by for example bringing it up when you get asked if you have any questions, this will set you up a someone who's not only going to be valuable in the immediate future but also long term in the company.

An IT consultant is hired for formulating and implementing solutions to business problems which in-house staff is unable to resolve either due to lack of time or resources or skills. The interviewer is more interested in how the consultant can utilize his/her expertise to formulate a plan of action in best interest of business. To showcase your technical edge during interview tailor made your answers as per business scenario and support trade offs with valid reasoning. I’ve spent a long time adding every tool , platform and build into an “Appendix” of detailed examples of experiences. It’s not only a motivating reminder of why I have a seat at the table but more so a treasure chest of examples when the opportunity requires narration of actual content .

Examples are so important in order to ace the interviews, because knowledge is of no use when you have not even used it practically. And this is where the young adults and new college grads make a huge mistake. They have education, degree, and knowledge but what they lack is more practical knowledge that is why students with Internships or some sort of volunteering get hired first. By preparing the example, you assure the company that you know what you are talking about. The examples set a strong foundation for you when you get hired. So no matter what always provide an example and ideas in the interview.

The examples will get you in the door, but once you're there, it's about how you will gel with the team and your presence around a client. Be sure to include the people side in addition to the technical. Also, a good portion of problem-solving will be talking with clients and client staff. Show you have good questioning skills to get past the initial symptoms (what hurts) and get into the diagnosis (what's wrong) to develop a solution. Polish those skills and lead with them. Many people have the technical skills to be good, but very few have the social and coaching skills to be great.

Typically, examples need to be expressed in the form of a short “story”. Explain the problem, describe what you had to do and how you did it, then talk about the results and outcomes. Where possible, using specifics like “the changes we made resulted in a 50% increase in impressions” or something like that will help tie it all together. Even better if you can like the outcome to financials, but it’s not always possible or necessary.

Alternatively, you may also spend 2-3 minutes looking for the coding problem and keep thinking about its solution while you are in travel, sitting idle or before sleep. This will train your mind to explore solution differently. The moment you get some time to sit in front of your machine.. type the code, execute and repeat for next challenge or optimize existing solution. Always, search for "Whats new in ..... " and get yourself updated with your stack. Check their official sites for up to date info.

Most skills you have are irrelevant! Let’s put it straight, if you speak 7 languages but are being hired for translator in a single country those might be so relevant. IT works the same way. Don’t lie on your CV because you might be tested for frameworks you provided although they are not needed for the position (they are just testing if you are reliable)

This might help but it will be up to the interviewer!! Obviously the position and candidate expertise influence a lot. Ultimately it will come to the interviewer who might even make questions about frameworks you work with just to test you (both on knowledge but mostly to test your CV)

Displaying too much of what you know may project the erognace in you. I would choose to be seen as a listener and a problem solver.

Being a consultant is very rewarding, and you have to get to grips with the fact that you are a hired hand and will be treated as such at times by some demanding clients—sometimes just like the boss you had who helped you decide to leave and become a consultant.
