What are some tips for prioritizing tasks in UX Research?

Framing a design challenge effectively is a crucial step in the design process as it helps define and clarify your goals and scope. The way you articulate the problem can significantly impact the direction and success of your design efforts. Scoping is arguably the most important phase of any UX Research project. Because deciding on a research methodology is wholly dependent on the study scope, a scope that is too vague or broad can result in a mess of a study, wherein the type and amount of data collected aren't conducive to actionable insights and recommendations. While there's no such thing as "too much" feedback, there is a such thing as feedback that is irrelevant to the research questions at hand. Sifting through a mass of data eats up precious analysis time and may muddy the water for researchers and stakeholders alike. Be clear and concise with your questions for stakeholders to ensure your study reflects their specific research goal.

Find out the user problem, their needs and requirements is a key step. It basically gives a proper destination and directions for finding out the best way to solve the problem. Defining the question, method and proper tools align the research objective and clear expection of a user or stakeholder.

Prioritizing task is not challenging if you know how to prioritize. There are multiple factors such as impact, urgencies, feasibility, alignment with goals, users feedback. These 5 factors will decide which task should be the most priority one. There are multiple methods you can consider like: effort and impact metrics, feasibility, desirability, viability scorecard, RICE methods, MoSCoW analysis, Kano analysis.

Build in extra room when planning as there will always be changes, whether in scope, timelines, priorities, or resourcing. Block of time in your daily schedule to adjust and update the plan as needed. This seems obvious and simple, but without protecting this time to review the tool, the tool is not as powerful. There's power in consistency and the mundane.

Here's an approach I have found useful. 1) At the beginning of a project, identify attributes that seem similar to prior projects, and identify attributes that seem unique. A detail might be new while the pattern is not; e.g., "First time working with C++", vs "Working with a new language (C++) -- similar to when we first used Java". The pattern is more important, here. 2) Update these lists throughout and at the end of the project. Along the way, if the project misses dates, identify attributes that contributed, the length of the slip, how it was overcome. Save the plans (orig. and revised). As you plan new projects, use your attribute lists to find similar prior experiences; use your documented impact notes to create a better plan.
