1 Test your technology

I cannot express the importance of this as a practitioner and the owner of a consultancy. Never assume everything will be okay on the day and prepare in advance! Tech Check: Before kicking off your online orientation, give all your tech and gear a good once-over. Make sure your internet's solid, and your audio and video are clear. Test out screen sharing and recording too. Get your attendees to check their own gear and try the orientation link before the day to dodge any tech hiccups. And hey, always have a Plan B for tech troubles.

To nip tech troubles in the bud, send out crystal-clear instructions to your participants well before the session. Walk them through using the platform's features like chat, polls, and breakout rooms. Whip up a troubleshooting guide or FAQ for typical tech snags. Plus, have a tech support buddy or co-host on standby to help out with any questions or glitches during the show. If it can go wrong, it will. I STRONGLY recommend you throw in some polls or quizzes to keep them engaged and check they're following along. Spot a glitch? Call it out and tackle it fast. If things get sticky, don't sweat taking a quick break to sort things out. People are more understanding than you think.

Technical hiccups are part and parcel of the online landscape. It's crucial to be proactive, flexible and patient when glitches arise, because not every learner of yours would be as tech savvy as you. A handout to download and test the links sent a day before your training helps a lot. But even that will not guarantee a smooth session without interruptions of learners joining in and dropping out. When we first went online with our trainings during Covid our L&D teams had a hygiene list to follow, numbers we could speed dial for tech support, workaround solutions as well as a strong dose of humor on the side. Anticipate potential challenges by allocating extra time in your schedule, because online trainings are here to stay.

There are not many times I use "always" in our work, but when it comes to dealing with technical issues, I make an exception. Always have a backup plan! As you're planning exercises / activities, don't neglect to ask yourself: What if this doesn't work? A good objective can be met in more than one way.
