A great way to help you with this is to create an aspirational job or career “vision board” that includes titles and snippets of responsibilities, requirements and skills needed for those roles and use that as a guide or roadmap to what you should include on your resume according to your experience with these items.

One of my resume summaries (geared towards recruitment) starts with my WHY . “I’m a people person who believes passionately in providing better outcomes! Having survived cancer, I deeply care about improving the world around us! What better way than through technology, connection and storytelling?” Your resume is your marketing collateral with a goal to catch someone’s attention. You want them to want to keep reading! They won’t do that if they’re bored from the start. If you’re lucky enough to have someone’s attention, don’t waste it! Clarity on who you are will jump off the page when you’re unapologetically you!! Let that ooze out! You won’t be for everyone, but you’ll be for someone. Ditch buzzwords and jargon. Speak YOUR truth!

The key to a great resume summary is specifics. General or generic summaries that include basic language like: 'hard-working team player' won't resonate strongly with a reader. A resume reader needs to see details relevant to their job and pain points along with specifics that back up claims. Be sure to share exact sizes, scope, or other quantifying details. For example, if the organization is seeking an international sales executive, you should mention organization sizes you've worked with (large, global, Fortune 500) and/or sizes of sales growth/impacts (YOY revenue expansion). Remember, the summary opens the resume and will be one of the first things a resume reader sees. Make every word count.

4 List your skills

A skills section is where you showcase your core competencies and abilities that are relevant to the job. You can use bullet points or tables to organize your skills into categories, such as technical, soft, or language skills. Make sure you include both hard (technical) skills as well as soft (interpersonal) skills. A hybrid resume is designed to help potential employers understand how your skills and professional experience relate, so you might consider including skills and abilities you’ve learned from previous employers as they relate to your next position.

5 Highlight your work experience

A work experience section is where you describe your previous roles and responsibilities, as well as your accomplishments and contributions. Unlike a chronological resume, where you list your jobs in reverse chronological order, a hybrid resume allows you to group your work experience by relevance, function, or theme. For example, you can create sub-sections for different projects, industries, or skills that you want to showcase. You can also use a combination of reverse chronological and functional order, depending on what works best for your situation.

6 Include your education

An education section is where you list your academic credentials and achievements, such as degrees, diplomas, certificates, or courses. You can also include your GPA, honors, awards, or scholarships if they are relevant to your goal. Depending on your level of experience and education, you can place this section before or after your work experience section.
