The medium of film is fundamentally about story, so in the same way, your statement and any supporting materials must tell a story. Think about your audience. Look up the AIDA format (attention, interest, desire, action). A strong statement or a question to hook your reader. If you made a comedy film, your statement must make the reader laugh.

2 Director's Bio

It should include your relevant education, training, awards, and previous works, while also showcasing your unique perspective and style. Use the same sense of play that you used creating the film in writing the marketing materials. A film synopsis is a fantastic opportunity for you to display your creative expertise, just in a different medium. Furthermore, it's a great exercise in getting to know your film better. Sometimes, I will write the film synopsis pre production. It can help to illuminate key themes. Know your film, and writing the synopsis should be a very enjoyable and useful experience.

Formula: Setting, what the character wants, what's stopping them. The setting is the context. Your story is only as compelling as the thing stopping the character from getting what they want. Kung Fu Panda: In the Valley of Peace (setting), Po, an overweight clumsy Panda (what's stopping him), is chosen as the village's protector (what he wants).

It's the "What's it about?" question that I encourage people to think hard about. For example, is it an "overcoming the monster" theme as in Jaws, Star Wars, Harry Potter or the "Rags to Riches" theme as in Cinderella or Great Expectations.

Posters should always be final art and reflective of your final film. Do not under any circumstances utilize posters that are “proof of concept” with cast or thematic elements that don’t appear in your final film print.

Think about the "promise of the premise". Ghostbusters promises that there will be horror (ghosts) and there will be action (the busting). Buffy the Vampire Slayer promises comedy (Buffy name is silly), Vampire (horror), Slayer (action). Once you have your genre worked out, the poster needs to convey these elements. It needs to show a premise.

5 Film Trailer

A film trailer is a short video that showcases the highlights of your film and persuades the viewer to watch it. It should also reflect the genre, tone, and mood of your film, creating a sense of anticipation and excitement. To make an effective trailer, it should have a clear structure, a catchy soundtrack, and a powerful call to action. If you are creating a trailer for a short film, just show the setup. Tease the "promise of the premise", ie, what's in store for the viewer that the premise alludes to.

Trailers should be created for final, completed films and should include a “cutdown” version optimized for social media in a 9x16 aspect ratio and at a runtime of :60 seconds max. Do not create trailers as a spec for a film that has not actually been written or shot yet in your press kit. Remember a press kit is to promote a finished film, not to pitch a film idea for a film that doesn’t exist yet.

6 Press Release

A press release is an important written document that announces your film to the media and the public. It should include essential information such as the title, genre, synopsis, cast, crew, release date, and contact details. Additionally, it should highlight newsworthy or interesting aspects of your film, such as awards, reviews, festivals or social issues. To be effective, a press release must be clear, concise and compelling and follow the inverted pyramid structure - the most important information first followed by the less important details. When writing a press release use this format: start with a headline that summarizes the main news or hook of your film; write a subhead that expands on the headline; write an opening paragraph that answers who, what, when, where, why and how questions; add one or two body paragraphs with more information about your film; write a closing paragraph with a call to action or link to your website/social media accounts plus contact details of your publicist or distributor; lastly include a boilerplate that briefly describes your film company/organization and its mission/vision.

Emphasize prominent film festival entries and placements and wins but de-emphasize screenwriting competition wins and short film festival entries as these have a tendency to make films sound too scrappy or “unfinished”/low quality. Call out final film talent only - do not call out talent that is being “pitched” or “envisioned” - this is an immediate red flag.
