I find it worth showing the model the back of my camera here and there- this can reassure them that they are doing a good job, and can also help generate new ideas for poses, or if they say they can redo another shot but better since they can see it from your perspective

Once again, I like to use Pinterest for poses for models to give them an idea of what I’m looking for. The directions I like to give are more precise, such as “look down and then back up” for that natural non-posed eye contact.

Train yourself in being able to 'read the room' so to speak. Our jobs as portrait photographers is largely to convey character and personality in our subjects, and creating the proper environment to nurture the characteristics we seek is a valuable skill. Building a connection with another person, requires empathy and true, genuine interest in them as a person. Direction, ultimately is a polite way of saying manipulation; how you evoke, or in some cases, provoke, depends on how much you can build trust with your subject, if you can understand what makes someone tick, and what makes someone smile, and you have their trust, you can push and pull at your whim.

Never ask a model to do something I wouldn't be willing to do myself. Be willing to demonstrate a pose or try the position you want them to do. Refrain from using "pet names" until you've worked with them a few times and know they're okay with it. Make sure they're comfortable - breaks, hydration, refreshments, playlist choice, etc.
