In my experience when I speak I like to take the audience on the journey with me. I story tell, and as I do this my voice sits in tune with my emotions, the events that I am talking about. If it’s funny I laugh, if it’s emotional - I become emotional and I relive it on stage. I think being authentic with your topic is key. Tell your work through stories and tell the stories with real human emotions. This will leave the audience feeling like they have experienced something with their heads and their hearts ??
I take both a technical and intuitive approach to developing this skill. A technical approach includes emphasizing key points, building in natural places to pause, and creating variance in pitch by bringing ascending and descending melodies into your delivery. An intuitive approach includes connecting deeply to the meaning of your message and getting clear about your intention. Practice speaking your message out loud slowly and keep asking yourself..."What am I really saying here? What meaning does it hold for myself and my listeners?" Take time to sink into each idea. Get clear about what your intention is and where that intention changes. For example, is your goal to inspire, reassure, or direct your audience?

In the sentence- "The Global Financial Crisis of 2007-08 wiped off $2 trillion from the global economy", stress the words "$2 trillion". Underline the words that you want to emphasise, mark where you want to pause more, include notes where you want to change the feeling in your voice (joyful, serious, commanding). Then play with how you emphasise, e.g. with more or less volume or a higher or lower pitch. Have fun with it and explore in this practice phase.

But if you've overdone it, remember these are people before you. Converse with them rather than talking at them. Make eye contact. Relax and settle into connecting person to person. You have the chance to regain attention at any point. And just like with a movie or a novel, it's the ending that leaves the greatest impact.
When I started my public speaking, I didn't know the importance of vocal inflection. I used to speak monotonously. My father was the first one to give that feedback that you talk in one tone throughout the speech and you are not able to emote any specific emotions through your speech! He said, "even when you are talking about some sad situation, you appear neutral, even when you are talking something about happiness, you appear 'neutral'. Basically he was meaning 'neutral' as pale! Then he made me to stand in front of the mirror and look at my expressions! We also recorded the video of my speech to understand what needs to be done. Most people don't do it, but it makes a world of difference to the strength and depth to your voice - warm up. Take time a couple of times a week (and especially before an important presentation or meeting) to warm up your voice. Practice good breathing techniques, do lip and tongue trills, repeat tongue-twisters, do sirens up and down throughout your range.
In my experience, besides all the suggestions that I have read,it's very important to be and to demonstrate self-confidence in front of your audience. You have to be sure that the subject you are talking about has a high importance for the public, and keep talking with a lot of enthusiasm from the beginning through the end.
Something I have found useful when working on this with clients, is to use gestures when speaking. We naturally emphasise certain words with our hands - and with our voices. This adds variety of tone and naturally adds pauses. Another exercise is to use our fingers to indicate 'Point one, point two, the last point'. Again we emphasise and vary the tone and speed. These are easy ways to start adding more variety.
