Based on my event background I would always rely on the fact that budgeting is the main factor. Once the budget piece is approved, you can use your imagination and consider interactive workshops, like escape rooms, fostering collaboration. Outdoor activities such as team-building challenges or sports promote camaraderie. Additionally, themed cooking classes encourage communication and creativity. These activities enhance teamwork, making corporate events not only productive but also enjoyable for all participants.

It's very important to consider the interests and preferences of the team members when planning team building activities to ensure maximum participation and engagement. There are numerous team building activities such as: Escape Room, Cooking competitions, Sports activities, creative workshops, and others.

In my experience team building events can be a mixed bag. You definitely need to read the room and adjust accordingly. Activities that allow for organic interaction seem to be the most effective. People generally want to get to know each other but not through forced interactions.

Does your activity require a lot of movement that may be challenging for those that use mobility devices? Will there be a lot of noise or distractions that make it uncomfortable for those that are neurodivergent? If there's an opportunity, ask your audience in advance what accommodations they may need. This will help you consider their needs when selecting an activity. If you don't know your audience needs it's best to find things that are accessible and inclusive for everyone regardless of physical, mental or social differences.

I always work backwards from my audiences perspective. What do they want to hear and how do they want to hear it? I never assume or project on what my target audience wants. Rather I make sure I am operating as if I was one of them. Engaging in the same events. Reading the same articles. Attending the same conferences. That allows me to understand their perspective and build a clear path of communication towards them.

Mix it up is a great idea. We went bowling with my co workers which was a lot of fun. We did the escape room one time and we also did dinner where some of the staff were new and some who work in our satellite office who we did not see for a while. Everyone got to know one another and we had a lot of fun talking and laughing. A lot of fun.

Here's an example that builds an electric connection for groups of all sizes: Game: "Send It" Instr: Have your leader explain how important it is to share words of wisdom and encouragement (a universal truth!) plus one of their favorite life quotes. Then give each guest a pen and a high-quality piece of paper and ask them to write their own words of wisdom, along with their name/email (if fitting to share contact info). Provide instructions for the entire room to fold their sheet into a paper airplane, then let the words fly. Attendees catch the airplane nearest, and aim to meet the contact on the paper while at the retreat or connect by email. Simple and meaningful!

As they say, location, location, location. For corporate team building I try to mix it up and change the location. Go to Dave and Busters or do a round of laser tag, bring your C-suite on a cruise and hold inspirational lessons on the sea days. As you change the location, you will leave and impression on the team and they will remember it more. The idea is to help the team actually remember and apply the training, not just get out of work for a day or a week. Another concept is to bring in an expert from a completely different filed or business vertical and then have a session on how that applies to your field. But change the venue of course.

I recently facilitated a sound healing and guided sunrise meditation walking session for a corporate team offsite, and it was incredibly well received. In a corporate environment our leadership is constantly on the go whether business travel, presentations, decision-making, a never ending email flow all while maintaining a work life and family balance. This was a quite treat to support our leadership who are typically “always on” in quieting the mind and awakening their awareness to nature and relaxation techniques. From an ex employees perspective... Many hate team building days. Consider what the objective of the team building is. Why are you doing it? Having team building events for the sake of it achieve nothing but annoyance that the company is wasting money instead of giving pay rises.

Knowing your staff’s strengths and weaknesses should play a key factor when choosing your activity. Your group’s demographics, such as age, physical, fitness abilities, etc. should also be considered. We’ve been creating teambuilding programs for more than 20 years and in our experience, we have found that surprising your group is not always a wise decision. We find that what works best, is if you prep your team & get them excited about the activity. When picking a teambuilding company, be sure to vet them properly. Be sure they understand your goals and they have the experience & trained Staff to make it happen.

Don’t underestimate the importance of the facilitator! A great facilitator can often read the audience and shift as needed thus meeting the audience where they are, and going from there.
