One of the pioneers of CBE in higher education is Western Governors University (WGU), a fully online institution that offers degrees in business, education, health, and technology. WGU uses a competency-based model that allows students to complete courses based on their prior knowledge and experience, and to take assessments whenever they are ready. Students pay a flat fee per six-month term, regardless of how many courses they complete. WGU also provides students with mentors, coaches, and instructors who guide them through their learning journey.

Competency-based education is a method of academic instruction and evaluation based upon students demonstrating their mastery of a subject. This method focuses on having students “show what they know” and applying the concepts they've learned to evaluations that show they've truly grasped the subject. Examples of open-source competency-based curriculum resources include EL Education, English Language Arts (ELA), life science curriculum (only for K-5 and built for the EL network), and Open Up Resources, which offers standards-based open content for ELA and math. teachers may ask students to submit a video essay, or create a digital portfolio that can be shared online.

CBE can also benefit corporate training, as it can help employees acquire and update the skills that are relevant and in demand for their roles and goals. One example is IBM, which has developed a CBE framework for its digital badges program. IBM offers thousands of badges that cover various topics and levels of expertise, from cloud computing to data science. Employees can earn badges by completing online courses, projects, or assessments that demonstrate their competencies. The badges are verified and recognized by IBM and other organizations, and can be shared on social media and resumes.

One example is the Competency-Based Education Network (C-BEN), which is a consortium of higher education institutions that offer CBE programs.
