Not every ERP must be adopted but it is the role of management to remain current and explore opportunities to improve process, reduce waste and calibrate for efficiency. Attending industry and trade events can be helpful to learn these. We do not need to embrace every new ERP module but we need to find those that could create value. For some of us who have to work with various legacy softwares, there are options of EDI, middleware and API that can help to us integrate these platforms without forcing the company to go through endless cycles of software roll out. Less than 40% of such implementations are successful. There is no point introducing new ERP if the company processes are flawed with core functions yet to be digitalized.

The most critical aspect while implementing ERP in any organisation is to have a proper road map of the processes which are implemented, identify the bottlenecks, improve process to ensure smooth and economical transition and functioning of the business. During the process of developing the flow chart it is important to involve the process owner to get his/her consent plus suggestions for improvements if any, role of the power user is very important for. If the flow chart is perfect and properly tested both by the user and power user the chances for having to troubleshoot will be minimal. As for implementing updates it is the combined responsibility of power user and IT department.

ERP evolves with constant change and innovation. These must not be considered as obstacles for your ERP career. This evolution brings about a growing demand for ERP implementation and upgrade resulting in more job opportunities. It is therefore important to permanently accumulate and update ERP knowledge with the latest innovations related with generative AI and blockchain for example. You also need to be aware of the evolution of best practices which are new or follow some pattern like data privacy protection and sustainability features embedded in ERP software to satisfy trendy or contemporary client requirements.
