What are some strategies for making decisions when you have limited time?

To tackle any challenge or achieving any goal, the first step is identification. Identify the objectives, the potential challenges ahead and that will help to create solutions around them for efficiency and smooth delivery.

In the same vein as identifying the goal, one must know what they do not want to achieve. This will assist in keeping focused on what is important and what is not.

- Use past data to analyze, compare and predict. - Focus on the bigger picture at all times and then narrow down the problem by reverse engineering - Collect data from authentic sources, approach people with experience in the same field to understand what not to do which is more important than just looking for what to do.

After identifying the goal, the next in line is to collate data, compile information necessary for the achievement of the project, filter the information to eliminate garbage, simplify the remainders, choose the easiest and simplest model from the interpretation of the information at hand, that will help to make a strategic decision to achieve the goal. This makes a detail approach to achieve the same result in shorter time with maximum outcome.

Comparison of alternatives will be a quick guide to foretell the outcome of the decision you will make after analyzing the information collated. However, bring all alternatives on a board with necessary metrics of value and check through which gives the best outcome in submission of the total pros and cons of all alternatives. Scenario analysis would be a great tool here, SWOT is ever golden for this as well. Let the one with minimum bearable consequence be the best option to decide.

With all the necessary information in hand, I explore different pathways. Using tools like SWOT analysis, I map out the terrain of possibilities. It's a balancing act between creativity in brainstorming options and realism in evaluating them. For me, this stage is about opening doors to potential solutions and then thoughtfully considering which door leads to the best path forward.

When the best option is filter off the alternatives, the next is application, switch it on action and let it play its role. No decision appears to be imperfect before taken, the outcome decides that and let the feedback of the decision help to make room for improvement and modifications for future reference. The confidence in executing the plan is based on the due diligence and homework properly done from identification of goal till the executing stage, and that should be documented as well to present the thought to stakeholders on why such decision is taken in short time planning.

This is normally the hardest part for new leaders. Leadership is very dependent on your ability to make decisions and almost every decision you make will have at least one opponent (often times many more). What you can't do however is suffer from "paralysis by analysis" and get caught in a whirlwind of reviewing choices and data over and over again while nothing gets accomplished. Utilize your team and gather all relevant information from your SME's; but then it's on you as the leader/project manger/product owner to make the decision. This is often time the hardest thing for leaders to overcome. But normally, the cost of not making a decision is much higher than not making one, even if it's not the "prime" or "optimal" one.

Choosing and acting on the best solution is where courage meets preparation. I've found confidence in my decisions stems from the groundwork I've laid in understanding my goal and gathering information. Communicating my choice clearly to those involved and swiftly putting plans into action has been key. I've learned that indecision often costs more than an imperfect decision.

Every time we take a decision, we do believe it will go well and the outcome would be impressive. Some times it comes opposite and undesiring, it is natural. For that reason, we need to learn from every decision outcome, what went wrong along the line, is it the model of executing, or other contributing factors during execution? What ways to prevent such in the future? Where can the challenges be met half way before decision taking to ease the execution plan? All of these questions will shape and improve our decision making in a tough and limited time.

Whenever a big decision needs to be made, there is often more time than we think we have. Speak to other people close to the situation, get alternate views - there may be something you are missing, or another perspective to consider.

Making the right decision requires rigorous cause-effect analysis and verification of assumptions. Sometimes, there isn't enough time to do this. The consequence is sloppy decision-making and suboptimal outcomes. There are two possible ways to solve this conflict. First, we may question the time constraint. Is it a real constraint or is it arbitrary. Often, the lack of time stems from arbitrary deadlines that can be changed. Second, we can look for ways to speed up rigorous analysis. If we train ourselves in using a structured method such as the Logical Thinking Process, we become much better at making good decisions fast. And if we take advantage of artificial intelligence to speed up our work, this further reduces the time needed.
