What are some strategies for improving your strategic thinking skills?

When I started as a PM, I used to look for case studies inside and outside my organization to understand how to master this skill from a PM perspective. Brainstorming sessions with seniors and mentors are also excellent choices.

I would say this is the key item in improving your strategic thinking - taking it to the stakeholders and getting feedback. Creating a strategy that has only been in front of your eyes, or presented to just a few people in your closest circle is not really even a beginning. For a strategy to have a chance of being successful it has to have life breathing into it from many sources and perspectives. Because a strategy is an 'operational translation' of the company vision and mission its main strength is the support it gathers I delivering on these top level ambitions. Pause and Reflection helps in bettering thought process improves clarity and helps rationalizing various thoughts and decisions and even allows for course correction when needed. A PM deals with several crucial problems each day which are very different and sometimes even unrelated. There are times that a decision fatigue happens. Among various methods to improve these skills, I highly recommend getting to know your customers better. While studying past user research reports is beneficial, directly interviewing with your customers can be even more effective. Engaging in conversations with them provides real-time insights and a deeper comprehension of their needs and preferences, which is crucial for developing robust and successful strategies.

For Product Management, to improve strategic thinking: 1. Study Market Trends: Understand industry shifts to anticipate future needs. 2. Engage with Customers: Regular feedback sessions to grasp evolving demands. 3. Analyze Competitors: Learn from their strategies and adapt. Regular SWOT Analysis: Assess your product's Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats. 4. Experiment and Learn: Trial new features and learn from outcomes. For example, using customer survey insights to innovate or modify a product feature, aligning with emerging market trends.

One of the major ways to improve strategic thinking as Paul Graham stated in one of his articles is to 'learn to take the status quo for granted and start to question things'. Why do I spend so much time ironing my clothes? Because my clothes come out of the washing machine wrinkled? Why does it come out wrinkled? Because the washing machine gets it all tangled and creased? Are there better ways to solve this? Once you begin to do this and also pay attention to things that chafe you, it can skyrocket your critical thinking skills.

Based on my latest attempts to produce something called "strategy" or "strategic intent" I had to change quite a lot of how much of that I put on myself. I believe I was initially misunderstanding the feedback I was given to be more strategic, thinking it's something I do. Turned out that the best results came when I turned it into a team sport, and made everyone equally responsible for having that sense of direction and intent. Our first attempt at that was to try a bottom up approach where we all took a piece of the product landscape and created 'strayegies' but it's only when we brought it all together and worked on the joined picture we actually created something both inspiring and enjoyable.
