What are some strategies to improve your chances of getting promoted?

A few suggestions that have worked for me: 1. Fulfill your manager/ clients' objectives along with yours. The more they talk about your work to others, higher are your chances 2. 80-20 rule (applied everywhere). 80% do, 20% talk about what you do. Knowing when and to whom to say what is an art. Tap into it. 3. Use leverage: If you're the only one in your team who can do a thing, get an idea of market pay benchmarks and speak to your manager 4. Speak-up: Your manager won't know you're looking for a promotion unless you actively speak about it. We sometimes underplay ourselves. Never assume and speak authentically.

The universe we live in itself has to evolve continuously to survive. No exception to careers. Keep adding skills and keep making oneself redundant so that you can move up or later by training someone else for your existing job.

I agree, learning should never stop in one’s career no matter where they are in the organisations ladder. There is always and opportunity to learn and grow from your superiors, your peers as well as the new joiners in the organisation who might bring a completely fresh perspective.

Knowing more than what you knew yesterday always helps. We all have to be a "Change Manager" irrespective of what our business card says. Continuous Improvement mindset is the prerequisite. As an Industrial Engineer, I believe in focusing on low hanging fruits like Kaizen, 5S, Value Stream Mapping and other lean tools. Knowledge of these is a good starting point for Operational Excellence Journey.

In my experience building network inside and outside my organization is something I enjoy tremendously and I’ve been able to have great success specially when just a simple conversation with someone can turn into a partnership or relationship that opens the door to share ideas, interests and or occurrences across your personal and professional path with others. - You learn from them and they learn from you. - Connects with you others to get different points of view about interesting topics. - You meet new people that down road that interaction can benefits both parties. - Get a different perspective about a common subject. - Meet others, period.

The best way to show your impact is showing your process (not just the result) in a story that can easily be followed by your audience. 2 key factors. 1. Know and study your audience. If you’re presenting to financial quorum the story is told differently than to an operations quorum. 2. Learn the language. The tone and technical content is totally different if you’re presenting to your coworkers vs your peers vs management. Learning the language means being able to share the same message and content in different levels of the organization. This may need some practice, however the rule is simple: the higher the level of the organizational audience the simpler the material has to be. These 2 points can be learned easily by anybody.

Don't be afraid to make big jumps. We have a tendency to sometimes consider a negative response or see no option to attain something just because it's against the convention. Keep taking baby steps, send out cold mails even within the organisation to seniors you wish to connect and learn from but always be disciplined in your approach. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, just make sure you the trade off doesn't impact anyone negatively.

Speak up! It is extremely important to speak for yourself, chase the raise, chase the promotion, get noticed. Big opportunities won’t happen unless you do!

A risk with being promoted within your current organisation is that: - if promoted from 'worker' to 'supervisor' there is a risk of a rift with colleagues (aspects of 'firmness', 'fairness' and 'friendliness' can lead to conflict), so it is ESSENTIAL that the promotion is out of your current work team. - the transition from 'worker' to 'supervisor/line senior' will require the greatest shift of mindset that you are likely to face in your career (until the transition from manager to director). The first level of line-senior/supervisor tends to be the "meat in the sandwich" between 'workers' and 'management'. So consider not only HOW to get promoted but also your WHY and the WHAT mindset changes and consequences you will need to live with.
