Step one is helping educators to understand that this is a problem that affects learners and their capacity to learn. Many educators do not realize that the problem is more widespread than before the pandemic. We cannot have learners in our classrooms who have anxiety about where they will sleep at night and all the other issues that come with being homeless.

2 Provide emergency and short-term assistance

Some students may need immediate or temporary assistance to secure housing or shelter, especially in times of crisis, transition, or hardship. You can provide or facilitate this assistance by establishing or collaborating with emergency funds, grants, scholarships, or loans that can cover rent, utilities, deposits, or other housing-related expenses. You can also partner with local shelters, hostels, hotels, or other organizations that can offer beds, rooms, or vouchers for students who need a place to stay for a few days or weeks. Additionally, you can create or support peer networks, mentorship programs, or online platforms that can connect students with each other or with willing hosts who can offer couches, spare rooms, or shared spaces.

This is a very important task-- that needs its own person in charge. On my campus, we now have a psychiatric social worker who provides counseling services. We also need a person who is in charge of this kind of care. If it was expected of schools to provide this with no support, then it would become one more burden on schools-- with no positive outcome. In my district, schools already provide three meals a day. Collectively, we could also provide support for our learners and families who are homeless, but its going to take some effort and organizational planning.

3 Develop long-term and sustainable solutions

While emergency and short-term assistance can help students cope with immediate needs, they are not enough to address the underlying causes and structural barriers that affect student housing and shelter access. You need to develop and implement long-term and sustainable solutions that can increase the availability, affordability, and quality of housing options for students. Some possible solutions include building or expanding on-campus housing facilities, negotiating or subsidizing off-campus housing contracts, creating or joining housing cooperatives or communities, advocating for policy changes or reforms that protect tenant rights and prevent discrimination, and educating and empowering students to make informed and responsible housing decisions.
