Yes, while most places may be moving to automation, I still work as a manual tester where automation is not feasible any time soon. I would say this is not a hard requirement to understand for regression testing IF you are performing manual testing.

Again, if all testing is manual this is more of a "plus" than requirement. If you are good at writing the manual tests so they can be automated, that would work to help set your company up to easily transition when able.
