Testers often face challenges when it comes to non API based payment methods. The ones that require page redirects and multi-factor authentication for example. Reporting is as well another area that is often not feasible to reproduce on a test system. Fetching settlement files from the acquirers was very problematic, due to the incomplete integration they have with the payment gateway.

One thing I have found helpful is Using a python script based performance testing when it comes to non API based transaction testing. Jmeter is very useful when you wanted to test API based testing. Using python script you can simulate multiple clients at same time and send desired format of transactions

Good summary, but performance testing is really hard to achieve in the payments world. Performance testing with live payments data is almost impossible as it involves cash flow, real cards and payment method credentials, multiple payment institutions behind a payment provider that could automatically flag the tests as malicious and block them. Performance testing on the test system doesn’t represent a real scenario as it is only offered by payment providers for merchants to test their integration. The test system is ran at low bandwidth and doesn’t connect to all third parties that are involved in a live transaction.

Have to also include Testing of Core Payment system using Test Simulators , Certification testing required by International schemes . Test tools providers like JPOS, Eftlab,FIME , UL to be included. EMV testing and certifications are another area.
