I like using GIS software to make static maps more than using R or other languages. R is great for analyzing data, but I find it easier to create good-looking maps by putting the results into GIS software.

The team behind tmap is working on a version 4 which will allow better addition of credits and texts around maps. You can plot with data in degrees and tm_scale_bar() can be used to insert a scale bar in Kilometers without any special conversion. With R, you can export your map as svg or pdf if you intend to further edit it or as png/jpeg for use in presentations or documents.

R is fantastic as an automated mapping tool. I do some great automated analysis and mapping using libraries such as data.table, dplyr, sf, terra, tmap, and more. Terra allows for parallel processing of large raster data sets. R also has libraries that allow you to connect to platforms like Copernicus C3S data sets directly through APIs. With mapping, I've got some more control over color ramps, map layouts and more in R once a template is created using tmap. I can create leaflet maps and save as html to share for viewing or embed anywhere online.
