What are some of the latest trends or innovations in image enhancement technology?

Today’s AI-based editing tools can be tremendous time savers for speeding up previously tedious tasks such as selecting portions of an image and creating masks. They also make short work of tasks like replacing backgrounds and skies. As always, though, it’s critical to use the tools judiciously to avoid over-processing images and making your edits look obvious. The tools are copilots — YOU’RE still the pilot.

While experimenting with AI photo editing for the past 12 months we've discovered that it cuts our editing time in half or even a bit more. This has been with a company called ImagenAI. Culling is now as time consuming as editing for us which is a wild inversion! We've also seen improvements in AI culling software such as "Narrative Select" which will sort each group of similar images into "rank order" based on technical considerations like sharpness and subjects with eyes open. You can filter out the "unlikely" images which are photos that are redundant, blurry, and with blinking subjects. That allows you immediately cull from a set that's 15% thinner.

HDR is one sexy beast. But only when used delicately. You used to have to take 3 photos of exactly the same scene (so with a tripod) with different exposures and then layer them together NOT ANY MORE!!! One button done TYVM!

I love a bit of noise on a photo. Always have. But mostly on music night shots and monochrome. I think it brings a little *chefs kiss* But on a portrait, na. Again, clickety click! One second sharpen in Lightroom It’s actually bonkers.

Noise reduction and sharpening tools are important, but as with so much in imaging editing, a little goes a long way. It’s easy to overdo it and make images look over processed and artificial. When sharpening, be sure to take the intended destination in mind — sharpening for screen is different from sharpening for print. And consider doing some local sharpening when appropriate — sharpening eye details, for example. Sharpening is an art form unto itself, and it’s worth learning how to do it right.

With Ai assisted noise reduction and sharpening at our fingertips, gone are the days of struggling to achieve that effect through more, perhaps even dated conventional means. It makes creation a little more effortless and can leave more time spent to creating other pieces of art.

As mentioned by some of the colleagues here, it is important to avoid taking images where the dark areas will have noise, by doing multiple exposures and combining with HDR. However when you can only take 1 image caring not to overexpose highlights, in this case it will be most likely to have noise in the dark zones. I have used a few programs to reduce the noise, but came out with a blurry or unreal dark area. Last month I came across with Pure RAW from DXO, and really was impressed how it eliminated noise. It has 4 different processes, 2 of them use AI, to recreate that should be in the dark zone, in some cases it over created leaves of a tree, but testing with the other options I was able to achieve a realistic dark area.

With so many platforms available to today, quickly being able to resize and crop can ensure the correct dimensions are used no matter which platform you’re seeking to display your work. The process is quick and seem less often being able to complete in one program.

When photographing documentary wedding events inevitably a moment is captured while on the go and the framing is tilted. If you've ever tried to correct tilt you'll know that often it tightens up the crop around your subject and even winds up lobbing off a subject's ankles or some other critical portion of the image. By expanding the image first, using Content-Aware resizing, you can give your image the space to straighten up and still have a pleasing balance.

Hmmm I don’t really do this. I’ve found that when I have, I’ll go back and edit something on each photo anyway so don’t see much point. I do batch watermark though.

Batch processing saves time and can double your productivity with whatever project you’re working on. This workflow is now streamlined in an age where time is money and money is time.

For volume photographers capturing events or headshots where a bulk of the images are made in identical circumstances, being able to apply settings across a large group of images is a huge time saver. Probably the best know 2 batch processors are Lightroom and Capture One.
