1 TCP metrics

TCP, short for Transmission Control Protocol, is a reliable and connection-oriented protocol that ensures data delivery and error correction. It uses flow control to adjust the rate of data transmission based on the available bandwidth and buffer space of the sender and receiver, as well as congestion control to avoid network congestion and packet loss. When monitoring TCP performance, throughput, round-trip time (RTT), retransmission rate, and window size are key metrics to consider. Throughput measures the speed and efficiency of data transmission in bits per second (bps) or bytes per second (Bps). RTT measures the latency and delay of the network in milliseconds (ms). Retransmission rate indicates the reliability and quality of the network in packets per second (pps) or bytes per second (Bps). Lastly, window size indicates the capacity and availability of the network in bytes.

2 UDP metrics

UDP stands for User Datagram Protocol, and it is a connectionless and unreliable protocol that does not guarantee data delivery or error correction. UDP is faster and simpler than TCP, but it may lose or reorder packets during transmission. This makes it suitable for applications that require real-time or low-latency communication, such as voice or video streaming, gaming, or DNS. When monitoring UDP performance, some of the key metrics to consider are packet loss rate, jitter, out-of-order rate, and datagram size. The packet loss rate measures the quality and reliability of the network in terms of packets or bytes per second. Jitter looks at the variation in the delay of packets arriving at the receiver in milliseconds. The out-of-order rate indicates the integrity and coherence of data by measuring the percentage of packets that arrive in a different order than they were sent. Lastly, datagram size measures the efficiency and overhead of data transmission in bytes.

3 How to monitor TCP and UDP performance
