1 Frequency response

Our highest tonal sounds are at best 14.5khz- 15khz. 16khz is the sound of "Air" to our human Ears. In part to Psycho Acoustics where we "feel the sound" more than just hear the sound. "Dogs" can hear 16khz-20khz... Our Lowest around 40hz. Below that we feel the sound of rumble,(Thunder).

Most decent monitors boast a pretty wide and flat frequency response. But that doesn't give any clue about what they sound like, or how good they will be in practice. I've owned three professional studios - the last one was purpose-built from scratch and designed by Andy Munro. It was also a live-end/dead-end design (you might like to Google this if you haven't heard the phrase before).

2 Power and volume

The power and volume of a monitor are related to how loud it can play your sound, measured in watts (W) and decibels (dB). A higher power rating means that the monitor can handle more input signal without clipping or distorting, while a higher volume rating means that the monitor can produce more sound pressure level (SPL) at a given distance. You want a monitor that can deliver enough power and volume for your room size and listening distance, without compromising your hearing or your neighbors' peace. So my advice would always be to a) design the room to be as acoustically accurate as possible first, and b) try out the monitors you're considering before committing. And finally c) never buy the monitors you 'like'. Monitors are meant to show up the flaws and the highlights, so the best ones will usually make you work harder to produce a good final result. Monitors you 'like' tend to make you work less hard because everything sounds good on them: not what you want if you're serious about producing great sounds!

3 Size and shape

The curved surfaces of Genelec speakers make them a great choice for the serious producer. They're very accurate and reliable, and make you work quite hard to get a good end result.
