Yes, in my years of teaching experience, I've observed that projects always help the students to learn every part of the concept or subject in more detail than what they usually would be learning in just a theory class. So, if we let them just practice on their own, they'll make mistakes for sure, but what they'll learn in a practical session will always be one step ahead of what they'll learn in a theory class. Hence, always urge the students to practice the concepts for better understanding. Or, just give them something to practice on their own if they don't find one by themselves.

This is key to solidifying the learning in their minds but it's important to find "work-adjacent" projects that fall somewhere between simple examples that fail to incorporate the complexity of the real world but present the key learning idea, and projects that are ripped right off someone's desk that have too many confusing and unrelated challenges to really teach the learner anything. I also find having a project that is outside their usual scope of work helps them get out of "work mode" and into "learner mode". They can play more with the content of the exercise without feeling triggered by experiences in their everyday life or feel they need to assert mastery that limits their openness to new ideas and approaches.

Even if we take one subject, some topics students may find easy and other topic may be difficult. Difficulty level depends on learning profile of each student. First step is to identify the level of complexity of the topic through a baseline assessment or diagnostic assessment. Analyse the data, find the gap in learning and choose the teaching strategies accordingly. Teaching strategies can be any kind of memory techniques, Visualisation techniques, group activities , etc depends on the topic and the subject. Assessments and differentiation plays a key role in teaching topics according to the level of students.

I normalize the experience of these things so we can turn them into learning opportunities but I also de-stigmatize anything less than success so my learners are able to be open and vulnerable about what they don't know. We then reflect at the end of the learning block about the work and how it's landing for them. I'm intentional with my instructional choices and I share those with them so they have a model of meta-cognition to reflect on their own learning.

In teaching complex topics you may find that the complication is not necessarily regarding content complexity, but emotional attachment to topics. complexity could be the entanglement of facts, interpretations, experiences, emotions etc. Before diving into tools of unraveling the complexity of information/knowledge, is is important to identify emotions that may be entangled with the topic itself of the students' history of interaction with that topic. This could be true for teaching sciences as much as the humanities.

Get to know your students individually and learn how to respond to their focus ability, personality, interests, and relate the subject matter to those things.
