1 Example 1: NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Mission

The Mars Exploration Rover Mission, which launched two robotic rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, to explore the surface of Mars in 2003, was one of the most ambitious and complex planning and scheduling projects in history. It involved multiple teams, disciplines, constraints, uncertainties, and risks, and required a high level of critical thinking to design, execute, and adapt the plan. Therefore, the mission team had to define the problem and objectives precisely, gather relevant information from various sources, generate and test hypotheses and alternatives, communicate and collaborate effectively with stakeholders, and monitor and evaluate progress. To support their critical thinking, they used tools such as simulations, models, reviews, feedback, and lessons learned. The mission was a huge success that exceeded its original goals and lasted for more than 15 years.

This unprecedented project involved multiple organizations, sectors, disciplines, and countries. This remarkable project resulted in the successful development and distribution of over 5 billion doses of vaccines in less than two years.
