Shell is used for automation of routine task to make it more robust and less human intervention in daily operational task for a DevOps Engineer.

A shell should create a level of abstraction from the OS internals resource allocation, including presentation, user interface, and process identifcation and loading. It is important to see f the different concepts are proplery understood and comunicated. For example, on a cluster environment, show all resources on a unified view instead of having to gather per-host information.

Software packaging, policy and compliance skills such as GPO management, patching, and system provisioning (imaging) are useful areas of OS administration at any level. For an entry level Support role, focus on common break/fix examples (password reset, Office suite management, etc). I would also recommend becoming proficient in the OSes that you don't use everyday. When I was a daily Windows user, I found forcing myself to switch to OS X and various flavors of Linux was very beneficial.

Two aspects of designing a successful network protocol are mostly overlooked: security and latency. The former is usually addressed by using encryption, and the latter using congestion control. Encryption addresses data-in-transit but there is more to look at for a protocol to be secure. My work at IBM Storage took me to the world of writing device drivers. The most important thing is timing control. Devices take time to do things, so precise timing of tasks would allow you to write efficient drivers. For 'slow' devices, they can yield processor time to other parts of the kernel while the 'slow' device is processing things. Other devices are 'faster' and the driver would have to spinlock rather than yield to avoid missing events. Good news is there is a ton of material around to study: Do it.

There are plenty of these around you can look at for inspiration ( e.g. SLURM ), but understanding how they work is useful if you are employed in a High Performance or High Throughput Computing HPC/HTC. Writing your own simple scheduler would be a great education.
