Another essential skill for a grant writer is the ability to write clearly, concisely, and persuasively. You need to communicate your project idea, goals, objectives, methods, budget, timeline, and evaluation plan in a way that is easy to understand, logical, and compelling. You need to use appropriate language, tone, and style for your audience and purpose, and avoid jargon, errors, and inconsistencies. The writer needs to connect to the grantor, at a human and emotional level - and that connection needs to happen in the first few seconds of the submitted documentation. It need not and should not be overly emotive, but in a way that leads the grantor to read more, consider more, and view you as something that is helping their cause.

The simplest and best advice I ever received is "just answer the question." Nothing more, nothing less. Beyond that, continually tie your work back to the funder's mission, goals, and priorities. Finally, it is easy to describe the WHAT: your mission and your programs. But a strong proposal will describe HOW your work solves a problem, WHY your work is important, WHY your work should be funded, and HOW the proposed funding will help.

The first skill of a writer is to understand the grantor expectations/interest. The second is to be able to contextualise the grantors idea to fit into the environment where the grant is intended to be implemented. The third is the ability to conduct an evidence base research to permit the writer capture the research gap. The next skill is the writing skill. The language should be simple to understand, the concepts should flow in an orderly yet persuasive manner like somebody saying Monday, Tuesday etc. This will permit you to connect with the grantor emotionally, logically and objectively. The language shouldn't be emotional, the grantor needs facts with figures not beutiful phrases. The last skill is time consciousness to submit on time.

A third essential skill for a grant writer is the ability to plan and manage your project effectively. You need to have a clear vision and strategy for your project, and break it down into realistic and measurable goals, objectives, activities, and outcomes. You need to estimate and allocate the necessary resources, time, and personnel for your project, and create a detailed and realistic budget and timeline. You also need to monitor and evaluate your project progress and performance, and report on your results and achievements to your funder and stakeholders. Project management skills will help you deliver a successful and sustainable project that meets or exceeds your grant objectives and expectations.

Don’t give up on a grant even if you get a no. I once received a no on a grant because they didn’t have enough funds to go around. I ran Into the grantor at an event about a year later and she asked if I had been able to get the security cameras. I told her no, and that I was currently working with police over a large theft. Told her she was the only grant written that year that I did not get awarded. The next day she emailed me to let me know she found a donor to provide the requested funds.
