What are some effective ways to teach English to ESL learners without technology access?

I recall a moment when I told a story about some animals playing soccer and asked each of my 7 y.o students to draw some characters of the story (blindfolded)??They were surprised to see all those lines shaping an entire story…it can be a good experience to observe student’s imagination and evaluate their comprehension simultaneously

Mimic, drawing, associations, body language... There are many ways to do so. I've already pushed objects, asked my students to do physical exercises with me and even learned a simple, quick and captivating way to make "stick figures" with simple expressions in order to use visual references in class. A smile, a tear, hunger, and many other things go beyond any language barrier and might be used to start building knowledge. After that, making logical associations will be much easier.

usage of flashcards, miniature toys and other real life models of existing items, helps students familiarize visual representations with words, especially since some may not be familiar with what the word represents. Story telling and even allowing students to practice with previously learned vocabulary and grammar. not forgetting games, and dialogues or peer to peer discussions, all these create an environment where students are able to learn and also exercise some intra and inter personal relations and learning. through helping each other and so forth.

Gone are the days when students used to practise grammar or any skill using worksheets. Now students of all ages dont want to stay static- they want movement. Teachers can build rapport when they play language games with their pupils. When the affectice filters are low, there are more chances of learning. We can play 'run to the board', dictogloss, and several board games in the class, based on the interests of students.

From Charades to Simon Says, I turn grammar practice into an epic adventure, where every word learned is a step closer to linguistic victory!

Jeopardy is also great to play in an ESL class! Award points as you would in a typical jeopardy game, and vary the difficulty of the questions (don't make them too difficult though!). You could test things such as vocabulary, verb tense, plurals, adjectives, and so forth. Organize the class into teams, depending on how small or large your class is. You could award the team with the most points with incentives, such as with a food or gift card prize, or being excused from a lesson. Skits, debates, and speeches are also a great way to practice writing, pronunciation, and public speaking skills.

Cantar facilita la pronunciación y es para muchos estudiantes más "divertido" que simplemente repetir las palabras; pero, no se debe "obligar" a los estudiantes pues muchos se avergüenzan porque no cantan bien y no les gusta exponerse. Debe ser una actividad con la libertad de participar o de simplemente escuchar a los compa?eros. Esta segunda forma "pasiva" permite que aun los estudiantes que no gustan de cantar, integren el nuevo vocabulario que aporta la letra de la canción.

Music adds fun and life to the all.As we have multiple intelligence children.Some are nature smart,some are number smart, some are music smart, etc So use of songs and stories will help those of children easily and also to other kids the class will be fun and entertainment.Connecting everything with songs and stories will help them to understand easily and memorize it.Like example of Alphabets again just saying A is not enough singing songs like A is for Apple an apple ,Aaaa apple and telling a story of A , like once an ant ate an apple and went UpTo to arms etc later telling student to make their own song and story ,share the story with all,sparks their knowledge, imagination, creativity.

Group work is a great way to teach your students cooperative learning. This can be used for debates, where you split the students into two groups: for the given issue, and against the issue. Students can work together to come up with arguments and counterarguments, as well as work on the delivery piece. Teamwork is dreamwork, and is a necessary skill to have!

Communication between peers may highlight points you wouldn't. They're at the same "level", so they may consider things that for you are obvious or "small" and by taking these things into account, make it much more understandable to those who are working at the same group.

What teacher sometimes cannot teach, students learn by cooperative learning that is the power of cooperative learning.Students learn from themselves interacting and sharing what they've understood where they have problem.Children often feel difficult to share their problems with teachers but they feel comfortable with their friends.like working in small groups ,sometime peer group sometime one to one partner sometime whole group creates bonding of child with everyone and they'll learn a lot about others perspective too.It helps children to solve problem themselves, communicate,collaborate and negotiate with each other.It builds their social and emotional skills too like assigning one group to present a presentation on letter A, and another.

Support and adaptation may seem (or even BE) chaotic when you're not used to them. But it doesn't mean it's impossible to control, evaluate and adapt. In order to do so, prepare beforehand, make sure you know what points you'll evaluate on each different option and don't make them too complex. Sometimes, simplicity is key.

One thing I have found helpful is identifying the needs of each learner and providing assistance to learners based on that. This way, learners feel honoured and are motivated. I also assign tasks to learners based on their individual strength and interest. For instance, I could ask a lover of song to compose a song for the class on certain grammatical rules which I will highlight.

Scaffolding and differentiation are invaluable tools in adapting the teaching to the diverse needs and abilities of my students. Scaffolding help students navigate through complex concepts or tasks include breaking down the learning process into manageable steps. Differentiation is like customizing a meal at a buffet, where students can choose what suits their taste and needs best. Differentiation fosters a sense of ownership and empowerment in their learning journey.

Use the studebts' emergent language. Keep note of the things they say in meaningful interactions and reformulate it on the board, giving them a more natural way to say it. Then you have lots of chunks of language to play with and recycle in later lessons.

This is a great article. However, there is no such thing as without technology. The title would be great if it was "without modern technology ". Pen and paper, and blackboard, are all technologies.

I work with just 2/3 people at a time which allows me to do cooking, baking, crafting and art workshops. This really rehearses useful English phrases in very natural contexts.
