What are some effective ways to recognize employees and boost engagement?

I think most people see recognition purely in form of monetary/ non-monetary. I believe there is more to what meets the eye. Yes, monetary incentives in form of bonus, increments and non-monetary incentives in form of awards are always a plus. But to truly boost employee engagement and foster a culture of recognition, 'Leading with empathy' also needs to be practiced: - Empathy towards individual needs of employees such as, not questioning their commitment towards their family, supporting in case of any personal issues, not grand things, but a simple act such as filling up corners for an employee in distress works wonders. Work will always be there and it should be, but recognizing them as peers and not resources will go a long way.

Personalizing recognition is critically important. I often use the Social Styles Inventory with students and with healthcare professionals and leaders. The four Social Styles are Driver, Analytical, Expressive, and Amiable. I am an Expressive and we love public praise and recognition of our ideas and unique contributions, but people with the primary style of Analytical, for example, may want a more private acknowledgement of their accurate diagnosis of a problem based on thorough analysis. The key though is to ensure that while you individualize your approach to recognition that you are still perceived to be consistent and equitable.

Companies often use a cookie-cutter program for reward and recognition. While it certainly helps standardisation and keeps it all systematic and organised, reward and recognition mean different things to different people. One of my managers once asked about what each of us would prefer by way of recognition, in a team setting. There was an objective and my manager was thinking about recognising the achievements once we reached the goal. It was astonishing how different our answers were. Whenever possible, try to personalise reward and recognition. It goes a long way in keeping people motivated in what they do.

While this may sound challenging or not even possible I can tell you it is very achievable. Thinking about each face you see as you pass down the office hallway or brief elevator ride as an opportunity to engage and create excitement around your organization’s mission and vision in every day experience. Having your elevator speech ready, with improv accompanying your 45 seconds regardless of whether they are an important executive, colleague from a completely different department or a service worker who helps maintain your facility. People are hungry for engagement and recognition that they are on your winning team.

I personally spent time with every individual of the team I led, I ensured I spent time each day interacting with them, getting to understand what drives their success and what ambitions they want to achieve. I individualized the recognition and feedback to them based on their personal traits. I ensured I had their best interests at heart and inspired with genuinely interested information and encouragement. Inspiration is key. Genuine and Authentic Caring is the solution.

An example I’ve seen is in the healthcare setting as it relates to working on the weekends or holidays. Employees feel valued if they’re allowed to choose preferred holiday and/or weekends. Personally, for years I preferred to work on Christmas Day to allow other coworkers the day off to spend time with young children. Also, while in graduate school I preferred working on the weekends to allow myself time during the week to attend classes. The key is to be flexible especially with your loyal employees and those with families.

I think formal awards are great (especially if they come with cash or other benefits), but I have often appreciated a simple personal email or a shout out during a staff meeting. Also, when a senior leader compliments a successful project or program, I am so motivated by a supervisor who responds by recognizing those who made it happen, rather than taking all the credit as if they did it alone. Those bosses who share credit earn my respect and loyalty.

An award given — even if a small one — immediately upon award worthy action has the biggest impact. Empowering staff to govern colleagues awards - especially micro awards — builds everyone’s morale. Both the giver and the receiver. A win-win!

The best approach is to ensure their pay raise this year exceeds inflation. No one works solely for gratitude. Additionally, focus on their development plans, as expressions like "thank you" and "good job" don't cover their bills. Peace and love ??

I agree, timely recognition whether big or small shows a leaders attentiveness to their team and employees as individuals as well as an immediate desire to show appreciation instead waiting until that recognition fits a incentive program or year end review. Also by being specific the individual being recognized is able to reflect on what they did right to receive the recognition, motivate them to continue performing well and also serve as a signal to others to take note of the example they should be following. All in all timely and specific recognition can easily serve as a double opportunity for praise and positive feedback! Who doesn’t love a good kudos!

In the event this is not possible immediately, I have found it helpful to keep a running record of things that stick out to me. Even if it is simply jotting it down in a Word document. In addition to being specific, if you manage direct reports, come promotion or rewards time, this enables you to guide them in the right direction. Humans tend to have recency bias, where they remember the things completed most recently and forget about all of the good contributions they have in the past. This process helps to achieve two goals.

We love to celebrate work anniversaries, birthdays, client recognition and other special events. Like many orgs, we use Slack and often share such updates there where the team can all easily see updates and cheer one another on. We have someone dedicated to the recurring updates and anyone can share other accolades and updates as they like. Keeping things simple and informal makes it an easy win and a lot of fun.

If you want your staff to stay plugged into the company culture, you need to treat them with dignity and respect, while providing many opportunities for professional growth, development, and lifelong learning. Feedback provided in a timely manner is also a key component for boosting employee engagement.

Something we did in my unit that worked very well is what we call ?peer rewards“. Nothing top down, more bottom up and cross-teams. On a regular basis all employees can nominate one of their colleagues who did something special, either from an innovation, collaboration or delivery point of view. This colleague will then get a small reward such as a voucher for a nice dinner.

Some employees do not need out-loud recognition nor praises for the job well done, they just need to be felt that they are being trusted.. meaning trusted that they are doing their very best to deliver their highest level of performance at work and that however they manage their time, it’s because they see its effectiveness.

As a young creative coming up in a very competitive and taxing industry, I was always motivated by the simplest acts of recognition and respect. Something as simple as making sure all contributors were recognized in public praise, award submissions, and company communication seems basic, but is rarely seen as important. Giving the folks who put in the most work (usually juniors, mid level and senior creatives) is paramount to them feeling valued, seen and respected. While we want to make recognition a habit it’s important to make sure the recognition is genuine. We should not recognize employees or our peers just because that’s what’s expected of us or there is a quota we have to meet for some incentive. We may not always be able to deliver positive feedback or give praise however we can seek to find opportunities where we can. For example, if you gave an employees critical feedback two weeks prior and this week you have seen significant improvement or their efforts to approve, sharing that you have observed that can serve as an opportunity to provide recognition and give motivation to continue to improve.

It is really important that the recognition of the team members should become a habit in the professional working environment. In order the team members and the colleagues to be highly productive and efficient during the daily work, they should feel that they work in an organization that their efforts are supported, appreciated and recognized. Therefore, the professionals will feel part of the team and the inspiration and motivation will be high so as to do their best in order to achieve successful results. Hence, the management should find ways to recognize all the hard efforts very often in order to motivate the employees and keep them aligned with the mentality and spirit of hard work and dedication that result to successful outcomes.

Recognition is wonderful; however I have always found that identifying ways to empower those who reported up through me boosted their engagement more than any other action. Most specifically, it is my experience that time spent empowering middle management provided an effective way to boost engagement throughout the organization. As well, meeting with individuals face to face, in a 1:1 setting, with the aim of highlighting how they are contributing to the culture, organization, and achievement of our shared goals and objectives seemed to work best for me and effectively boosted engagement among my teams.

I like to build a career path with the team members based on their strengths and the performance they have consistently been giving. Once you can make them Visualise near reality path based on these considerations the action for them becomes clear. They understand - what’s being valued - what’s invested by us - what they can do to get to a desired path if they are not happy with this - how their actions realigned the path This may sound like I have a formula to chart everyone’s career path but it’s more of a subjective view. With enough years you can imagine these logically :)

Recognize. This was never a reward of some sorts that will end up collecting dust or money that will be gone in 60 seconds. Being able to recognize means making people feel they exist. Talk to them. Know them more. Make them feel your presence. Engagement. This was never the out of towns, the drinking sessions, the parties. True engagement is that feeling of being one with a team sharing the same goals and pushing towards it.

Listen to them. Every employee should be having a regular 1:1 (like weekly) with their manager. There should be a building of rapport, so the employee can feel regarded as a full human being, not just a cog in the machine (and vice-versa with their manager). This is not just an opportunity for the manager to ask, "How's that work going?" but also an opportunity to help plan for the employee's future. Employees who feel appreciated and recognized are more likely to be engaged with what they're doing.

In my experience it is important to recognize people not for how their efforts helped me or even the organization but rather recognize them for how it demonstrates who they are as an employee and person. Absolutely one can let them be recognized for helping to meet organizational goals. However when you can let them know that their actions positively reflect who they are as a person and the quality of skills they have can be seen, it can really personalize the praise. It can be one of the most sincere ways of recognition. Employees want to know that we see them and their talents.
