What are some effective ways to build a collaborative relationship with your boss?

I’ve always made sure that as much as I’m there to lead and develop my own team, I am also there to protect my boss. Filtering the nonsense they don’t need to know about is important, yet ensuring they get to hear from me any news (good or bad) that will likely affect their position or its stakeholders is key. So understanding what your boss gets involved with is important as giving them the opportunity to be ready for anything thrown their way is vital. This helps build trust in you and your team and gives them the crucial ability to do their role in the knowledge that you’ll let them know if there are any issues, whilst leaving you to manage your level of responsibility, eliminating micro-management.

Demonstrate proactive problem-solving by anticipating challenges and proposing solutions. For instance, if you notice a potential issue with a project deadline, suggest a revised timeline and alternative strategies to ensure successful completion. This showcases initiative and fosters a collaborative atmosphere with your boss.

Regularly update your boss on your progress, challenges and achievements. Open and transparent communication fosters trust and demonstrates the commitment to shared goals.

Your job is to share with him/her in a way that helps them understand matters that affect productivity and the bottom line. You’d do well not to use your connection with leadership to tout preferences.

The CEO is chief visionary. Long term creative vision, outward facing and sales led. The COO is there to execute the vision of the CEO. Understand the long term strategic goal and turn them into measurable, bite size, short term tactical tasks. The COO is a process hound, more inward facing into the teams. Get that balance right, sprinkle with trust and constant communication and you won't go far wrong
