Help them self-advocate! Be a mentor, communicate with respect. Discuss vocabulary, when to allow transparency, dressing for the job, and changes in the market. Do a skills inventory. Research the policies and regulations associated with criminal histories. Help them identify a positive pathway they are comfortable with; do they need additional training, is there a volunteer or intern opportunity that could lead to employment? Help them to identify felon friendly employers and or entrepreneur opportunities. Help them create or update their resume. Guide them in gathering appropriate potential references. Finally, reading “Grit: How to Get a Job and Build a Career with a Criminal Record” with them book club style wouldn’t hurt.

I truly believe that employers/businesses should have plans in place to be supporting prison leavers re-adjust back to society by offering them jobs and support. Employers can mentor prisoners who are due to be released, offer training & support, and work with them on life plans & goals. No one person WANTS to be in prison, so, as a society, we need to support them greater to stay out of prison. DO NOT tar all prisoners with the same brush! They are individuals who need our help!
