It means actively seeking out and considering ideas from all levels and backgrounds within the organization, thus breaking down hierarchical and departmental silos that often stifle innovation. Encouraging open, transparent communication and providing platforms for sharing ideas can help in normalizing change and innovation. Moreover, recognizing and rewarding innovative efforts, even when they don't fully succeed, can create an atmosphere where taking calculated risks is seen as valuable.

Know what innovation goals the organization wants, understand each perspective, merge perspectives in one container with the same innovation goals, improve innovation for a more feasible difference.

Support is especially critical when you are first starting to develop a culture of innovation. Our team required more support at the start of our journey. We brought in an innovation consultant to do training and activities with the entire team. We set up an Innovation Support Team with the goal of encouraging and offering 'process' support for new ideas. Training is ongoing. New members join the team, but also we've provided more advanced training in a variety of methodologies for those who are becoming more expert in innovation methodologies. Most important, innovation is a key company objective. Support and encouragement comes from leadership, and it starts with the CEO. Leadership 'funds' innovation. This sends the right message.

In my experience quality leadership for innovation is crucial. Senior leaders can be a big barrier to innovation in organisations, and it's important that they understand the competences that support success. These might include visionary and strategic thinking, data-led decision making, adaptability and flexibility, a growth mindset, effective communication, resilience, calculated risk taking, and creating a culture that learns from failure for example. It's also important to lead by example, and to go and see problems / solutions for yourself to truly understand them. Get involved through governance - drive out fear of failure, and focus on creating a customer centric culture.

I have seen that a lot of the time to break the resistance of innovation is to create excitement through demonstration. Take a small project that you can turn into a fast win. This will validate the innovation process, and should give you enough data to convince people through results. People typically are skeptical and want to continue doing the same way. Not easy to make them listen, better to show them and excite them through the results that can be achieved. Note: Do not try to convince them through a long or risky project. They will just make it harder. Start small, get results, and keep pushing for innovation.

In most organizations I have worked with on this topic, there is a fear that Innovation will drastically force employees to change their current ways of working and master new skills or even make their jobs redundant. There are also siloed pockets of Innovation implemented through CoEs. One of the best ways to tackle this is to make Innovation part of everyone's job. Leadership commitment is critical by allocating performance goals tied to innovation or at a bare minimum, targeted hours every week for employees to expand learning or pursue their pet innovation ideas (this could even be outside their current business unit).
