Absolutely! I always began intake sessions with tutees by ascertaining their prior knowledge of the topics which they sought to master. Then, I got to know them as students and created collaborative plans for success based on their prior knowledge, learning style, strengths, challenges, and overall tutoring goals. During the tutoring itself, I checked for understanding, addressed any new questions tutees had, and give homework based on our studies before the next sessions. I also helped them become more independent learners while providing strong guidance in areas where they still struggled. Most often, I adapted my tutoring methods, how I gave homework, and changed overall goals as needed with tutee, teacher, and other team members' input.

When I was a French tutor, I always asked my students why they were studying the language. As I expected, they had specific, long-term personal and/or professional goals for doing so. Then, I used their input to strengthen their working knowledge of concepts with which they were familiar already. Consequently, I often focused on applying their prior knowledge to learning new concepts and to the tutees' long-term personal and professional goals.
