What are some effective strategies to critique a scientific article?

Understand the research context: 1. Identify the research question or problem: What is the main issue the study aims to address? 2. Grasp the background and context: What existing knowledge does the research build upon? 3. Understand the objectives and hypotheses: What specific goals does the study have, and what predictions are made?

To critique a scientific article, begin by understanding its structure. Familiarize yourself with sections such as the abstract, which summarizes the main findings; the introduction, which provides background and states the research question or hypothesis; the methods section, which details the research design; the results section, which presents the findings; the discussion, which interprets the results and discusses their implications; and the conclusion, which summarizes key points.

Evaluating methodology and design also includes critically assessing the research instrument and items to determine accuracy of content and the instrument reliability. Are the questions clear or ambiguous? Are they objectively phrased or do they prompt respondents to provide specific answers? Is the phrasing grammatically correct?

I would add considerations regarding the sample regarding the research participants here. If the study involves people, who is included in the study and who is excluded, and why? How large is the sample size? Is it large enough to warrant fairly robust results?

Analyze the research methodology: 1. Is the chosen research design (e.g., experiment, survey) appropriate for the research question? 2. Are the methods described in sufficient detail for replicability by other researchers? 3. Are the potential limitations of the chosen method acknowledged and addressed?

Of course, it will be difficult to generalize findings of the study if the sample is not representative and/or if the data collection process is unethical. In such cases, point to the limitations of the study.

Analyze the discussion and conclusions: 1. Do the authors accurately interpret the results considering limitations? 2. Do the conclusions logically follow from the presented evidence? 3. Do the authors acknowledge alternative interpretations or conflicting findings?

It's not just examine the references and citations. There is a need to cross check references and citations. Some scientific papers mention references to document their arguments, but in some cases these references does not add value to the argument or in worst case are not similar at all to the paper argument!

One of the things that I work with is formatting articles to APA, Vancouver, Harvard, etc. styles. Reading several different articles with an eye on the type of style it follows, provides me with input, and insights and refreshes my memory to remember all the rules to be applied according to each style. And there are SO many rules and all of them differ. Input is paramount!

Check if the data is presented effectively, using appropriate statistical analyses, and whether the results support the conclusions drawn by the authors.
