Automated tests help us achieve faster feedback loops, reduce manual effort, and ensure consistent quality across releases. Continuous Testing: - Our test suites run continuously as part of the CI/CD pipeline. This ensures that any code changes are thoroughly tested, preventing defects from slipping into production.

In test engineering, key trends include expanding automation to keep up with CI/CD, though maintaining stable, scalable tests is a challenge. AI-driven testing tools are emerging, but integrating them and upskilling teams is tough. Shift-left testing requires collaboration with developers, pushing testing earlier in the lifecycle. With the advancement of technologies now there are so many new trends in QA tools with AI features. Using these AI features now it allows us to design test cases, write test cases, create automation scripts, analyze results, etc. Also now we have tools with visual UI testing where we can compare the UI directly with a baseline image of the UI and then identify the issues from the comparison. LambdaTest, BrowserStack are some examples for such tools with similar features like above.

Human-AI Collaboration: - AI can augment our testing efforts. We experimented with ML models to predict high-risk areas in our codebase. It helped us focus our testing efforts effectively. However, striking the right balance between manual and automated testing remains an ongoing challenge. Test Data Generation: - AI-driven test data generation is fascinating. We used a neural network to create realistic data for performance testing. It saved us time and improved our test coverage. But, ensuring the generated data covers edge cases remains a puzzle we’re still solving. Ethical Considerations: - AI can inadvertently introduce bias. We once automated a hiring process, and the model favored certain demographics.

Automation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are prominent trends in test engineering, revolutionizing testing processes. AI-driven testing enhances test coverage and predictive analytics, enabling smarter testing strategies. However, challenges include the complexity of implementing AI in testing, requiring specialized skills. Testers must adapt to evolving automation frameworks and AI technologies, ensuring they align with project needs. Balancing manual and automated testing remains a challenge, as some scenarios still require human intervention.

Simple examples from the medical device industry includes robot-fed testers, and AI-based vision systems for performing visual inspections. Both of these can provide benefits by reducing operator influence (often a significant contribution to reproducibility), and enable more tests to be run. A significant challenge, however, is the validation of such systems. When used in formal Design Verification, for in-process controls or for release testing, the automation or AI software is subject to regulatory requirements for validation – or assurance – of software used as part of the quality system. In many companies, the competences needed for e.g. validating AI-software for use in quality processes are inadequate, which delays adoption.

Regarding AI testing, we should be aware that AI, ML.. algorithms can be biased based on the data they are trained on. So need to take care of this bias and ensure that the models are generating unbiased results.

Device Diversity: - With a plethora of devices, I encourage test engineers to prioritize compatibility testing across various platforms, screen sizes, and OS versions. Network Variability: - Real-world network conditions matter. I advocate for testing under different network speeds and reliability scenarios. Security Vigilance: - Security is paramount. I promote rigorous security testing, including vulnerability assessments and penetration testing. Battery Impact: - Mobile apps should be efficient. I recommend profiling battery consumption during testing.

User-Centric Security: - I prioritize security from the user’s standpoint. It’s not just about ticking boxes; it’s about safeguarding their data and trust. Ethical Hacking: - I encourage ethical hacking within our team. By thinking like attackers, we uncover vulnerabilities before they do. Privacy by Design: - We embed privacy considerations early in the development process. It’s not an afterthought; it’s part of our DNA. User Consent: - I champion transparent consent mechanisms. Test engineering is becoming more specialised and domain-specific. Starting out with testing of digital hardware for internet communication (including validation of the test software), I have worked with mobile phones and am now working with medical devices. I would, however, feel unable to go back to some of my earlier industries, simply because the test engineering task for these has developed i different directions from what I work with now.

Going from manual testing to automated testing was a unique experience, but not as interesting from going from automated testing to DEVOPS. Prior to automated testing, I had to manage deploying code to development environment manually with msbuild & file drop on webserver. Then with DEVOPS, the automated process was deterministic & repeatable thereby reducing problems seen on the deployed environment. I am definitely not a developer(only 1 semester of AP CS in HS), but I learned how to use code through the process of using automated user interface testing tool. As I gain confidence in the creation of the test automation, I started to break down the steps of the automation to code based steps & gradually invoke logical flows with code.

Shift left approach is currently trending and much needed for successful outcome of test engineering. It suggests the involvement of test engineering team right from the beginning of project. This can help eliminate the bugs in earlier stages of software development life cycle and can save costs of fixing them at the later stages.
