When we founded our company in Erfurt/Germany in 2003, we had no financial resources. Before we started our first production, we invited future visitors and other interested stakeholders to purchase shares of the first theater production. Each share came with an obligation and a gratification. Commitments included: provision of catering, materials, advertising, booking opportunities, media support and of course financial support, etc. Rewards included: tickets to the premiere and/or other shows, special talks with the director, the author, the protagonist, special receptions after the premiere or a special show that a "shareholder" bought his employees. This enabled us to finance the first show, the venue, the personnel &the overhead costs.

Grass root and community models are the future for medium scale theater operations. During my time as chief producer of the community-oriented, free theater project in Erfurt, we focused on making the city's communities and residents our partners. They were board members of our theater group and helped us reach out into the various communities, build partnerships and collaborations, and raise money. A patronage system helped us to distribute risks and to raise enough money to finance the artistic productions and the core team. The last point is programming: we have implemented a 6-week summer theater project every year with 25,000 visitors per summer. We needed the ticket revenue to fund our site-specific and innovative winter programming.
