Our team received so much community participation in our event because we did a couple of engaging things with our residents prior to our upcoming " community Thanksgiving family resource fair. We Hosted a Pre- Halloween event with (3) local middle schools & local governmental officials. The community participation was FABULOUS! Now so many residents know about our upcoming event because of last year's success ?? that WE are already receiving inquiries. ??????
For five years, I worked with a team to kick off our annual fundraising effort. We selected a speaker of note. The year we brought author, teacher and Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel was unforgettable. He spoke to a record crowd of more than 600. The fundraising was best ever. But most important, members of the audience felt embraced by his warmth, his humanity. Connecting a good speaker (doesn't have to be world famous) with a welcoming audience is a formula for success.

For years, we would ask folks to please silence or turn off your cell phones. Yes, it is important not to interrupt the flow, but I can think of instances when the speaker, the convener of a big, signature event asked folks, "Please, take out your cell phones." This week, at our National Philanthropy Day (NPD) Celebration, the emcee invited attendees to silence their cell phones but leave them out! Take pictures. Post on social media. Like our chapter Facebook page. Use the hashtag, #NPDLOVE. Asking attendees to show some love, using cell phones as the medium, can enhance engagement in a simple but direct way!
Interactive conversation needs to become the primary objective of the process to discover the direction the group wants to develop a mission understanding. The evolution of this process will identify the principles and mission that will create the Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the project. This also creates teamwork and cooperation to model the initiative to build the system to work together.
Storytelling is a powerful tool to connect with your audience on an emotional level. It can help you illustrate your impact, showcase your success stories, and inspire action. Use storytelling techniques such as anecdotes, metaphors, visuals, or humor to make your event more engaging and memorable. You can also invite your beneficiaries, volunteers, donors, or partners to share their stories and testimonials.
Another way to engage with your audience is to provide incentives that motivate them to attend, participate, and follow up. Incentives can be tangible or intangible, such as prizes, giveaways, discounts, certificates, recognition, or opportunities. For example, you could offer a raffle draw for attendees who register online, a free gift for participants who complete a survey, or a discount code for donors who make a donation.
When working for a national travel organization, I was always impressed by the way Disney presenters would use incentives to garner attention, and goodwill. At the beginning of customer service training, they'd ask some question and correct answers garnered a little Disney character toy, or some candy (think Halloween treats). Everyone was smiling. Everyone was paying attention. And you can bet that the next question asked elicited a many hands in the air. Giveaways and prizes don't need to be fancy, if they're employed for the right reasons!
The engagement with your audience does not end when the event is over. You need to follow up with them to thank them, solicit feedback, share results, and maintain contact. This will help you build long-term relationships, loyalty, and support. You can use email, social media, phone calls, or newsletters to follow up with your audience. You can also invite them to join your mailing list, follow your social media accounts, or attend your next event.
One thing I’ve found helpful is to combine the entertainment elements with the leverage of lived experience. As an LGBTQ2S+ person, who also has disabilities, I often turn to the voices that will be the most welcoming, and let them have the floor to share their experiences while entertaining. Stand-up Comics and Drag Queens being two categories of entertainment that bring the people in, but open the floor for serious discussion in the fun. When your outreach needs to battle outrage, make them laugh. When your outrage needs to battle oppression, make them sing. It’s the people who can talk about their lives and struggles in an approachable way that makes the stories hit home and bring empathy, and give voice to the people.
