It has to be actionable as well as specific and measurable. Too many Visions and Missions are meaningless words on a web page or a wall. They need to be "lived" from the top down.

One common cause of lack of clarity is trying to be everything and not focusing. Organizations should define their mission and vision in a way that makes it unique. Part of that means clearly understanding all the things you are NOT going to be. Part of that is being smart in defining a niche that is big enough to grow with but that is small enough for you to dominate. Even if you are in a lot of different businesses, you should be able to describe the common thread that you use to tie them all together.

2 Resistance to change

Another common challenge of leading with vision and mission is facing resistance to change from your team or other stakeholders. Change can be scary, uncomfortable, or threatening for some people, especially if they don't understand or agree with your vision and mission. To overcome this challenge, you need to involve your team and stakeholders in the process of creating and implementing your vision and mission. You need to listen to their feedback, address their concerns, and celebrate their contributions. Storytelling can be a valuable leadership tool in helping people through change. Be able to communicate your vision of where you are going as a journey that you will take together. Where are you starting? Where do you need to get to? How will things be better at the destination? What challenges do you face between? It also can help to share stories from the past about teams that have gone through similar journeys to show that it is possible.

Three things that can help avoid distraction and drift. Guardrails - Identify the figurative "guardrails" along your path that will warn you if you are too far off course. These could be caps/minimums on operational metrics (e.g., burning budget too fast). These could be scenarios that trigger alarms (e.g., we just lost a big client). Waymarkers - Identify some progress points you should hit along the way. For example, maybe it is the percentage of employees trained on a new system at the halfway point to implementation. External Monitors - Having an external mentor, executive coach, etc. can give you an outside perspective. Ideally they have experience leading through a similar situation that can provide insights for you.

4 Unrealistic expectations

A fourth common challenge of leading with vision and mission is setting or facing unrealistic expectations from yourself, your team, or your stakeholders. Unrealistic expectations can lead to frustration, disappointment, or burnout, and undermine your credibility and trust. To overcome this challenge, you need to set SMART goals and milestones that are aligned with your vision and mission, and communicate them clearly and transparently. One way to identify unrealistic expectations is to poll people about which of your many goals is the ONE least likely to be met. They aren't saying it will not be met, they are just saying it the least likely. If one of your goals pops out, it may be worth focusing on that one. Note that if you do poll people, you should consider doing it anonymously and just to vote for one in a defined list of options. You should also be willing to share the results back with them to be transparent. If there is an obvious "winner", people will figure it out anyway.
