Absolutely agreed !! Any type of API specification be it YAML or OpenAPI/Swagger, has the most frustrating part of syntactical errors and sometimes they are so trivial that it becomes hard to locate them. Like a missing semicolon or a missing tab. Is becomes even more frustrating when there are a specification validation tools that are monitoring all the specifications once they are published to any repository. they keep generating alerts and become a pain until these issues are remediated.

While syntax validation is key, being able to set up custom rules is where the real magic happens. It lets you ensure all your company’s APIs follow the same guidelines, making them more consistent and easier to work with. This kind of standardization can really streamline development and reduce headaches down the line.

The Swagger/OpenAPI specifications for both V1 and V2 are updated and maintained side by side. Deprecation notices are communicated through headers and documentation. Rigorous compatibility testing ensures V1 remains functional. Clients are informed about V2 with guidelines for migration. V1 and V2 run concurrently to facilitate a smooth transition, while V1 usage is monitored to determine its retirement timeline.

Handling API versioning was another challenge. As our APIs evolved, maintaining backward compatibility while implementing new features became a delicate balancing act. As our project grew, so did the complexity of our OpenAPI specifications. Keeping the documentation up to date became increasingly time-consuming. I found that treating the API specification as part of the codebase, subject to the same review and update processes, was crucial. Automating parts of the documentation process also helped alleviate some of the maintenance burden.

Consider that OpenAPI schemas can reference other schemas, and thus can be "split." This is something that should be planned out early, and best applied unless you're certain that your API will be limited in scale. I've encountered large schemas that then don't work with other API tools. Documentation and validation becomes more difficult and popular tools will struggle with an oversized schema.

Referencing and just splitting up an API does help in the long-term. Challenges I've encountered include doc generation failing due to schema size, or other tools we wanted like a schema diff tool to catch breaking changes failing due to a memory limit.

Security and privacy issues of any API is absolutely critical for any organization. It is the collective effort of all in a development team to ensure that the API specifications also have proper security mechanisms implemented and not just the API implementation. The best way to ensure this to have automated governance rulesets that validate your API specifications once they are ready for release.

Ensuring that our API specifications did not inadvertently expose sensitive information or introduce security vulnerabilities was a priority. Initially, we overlooked some of the security schemes OpenAPI offers. Investing time in understanding and implementing these schemes, such as OAuth2 and API keys, was crucial for enhancing the security posture of our APIs.

OpenAPI/Swagger (in the words of of the the maintainers) is purely a 'static document' that does not support ROLES. It is a testing/apidocs schema and NOT a RULES doc. As such, it cannot synchronize the RULES used across all your different services in a distributed architecture such as RBAC/ABAC. For example, lets say we have a USER ROLE and an ADMIN ROLE both requesting the same endpoint. Should they request it the same? Should they get back the same data? Should it be shown the same in the apidocs? No of course not. But in OpenAPI, the answer is yes to all three. Because it cannot separate out ROLES or associate role (and their params) to the endpoint. This leads to gaping holes in the security should you lean on OpenApi for security

Additionally, fostering a culture of documentation within the team ensures that keeping API specs up to date becomes a shared responsibility, not just a task for the API designers.
